I can almost guarantee that you’ve heard a version of the following phrase: “If you liked this, please hit subscribe!” Whether it’s for a newsletter, a blog, a podcast, or a YouTube channel, earning more subscribers is a goal for most of us creators. Most of us, however, are going about it all wrong. If you’ve been stuck at the same subscriber plateau for a while — on any platform — this newsletter is for you. Once you truly grasp the essence of what it means to gain a new subscriber, I promise you that things will… well… click. 😉 Let’s get unstuck… QUOTE OF THE WEEK “Every true leader is a true follower. Every true follower is a true leader. You are followed because of the dreams you pursue; you pursue others because of the dreams they follow!” ― Israelmore Ayivor THE STORY Subscribing is a commitment that goes far beyond the simplicity of a like button. Yet, when we use phrases like “If you enjoyed this content, please subscribe,” we inadvertently reduce it to just that — a quick vote of momentary approval. "Did this resonate with you? If yes, then hit subscribe." But here's a crucial distinction: people don't necessarily subscribe just because they enjoyed a single piece of content. They subscribe because they see value in what's coming next. A subscription is actually an act of investing in future content that the audience believes will consistently align with their interests. Understanding this difference is vital for your brand. When creating content for your channel, newsletter, blog, or podcast, view each piece not in isolation but as a component of your broader brand. Each piece should seamlessly contribute to an overarching narrative or theme. While the content may vary, there's an underlying consistency that your audience comes to trust and expect. Regardless of the topic or format, what you produce should resonate with them. This is where the art of building a loyal audience lies. It's about fostering a relationship where your audience doesn't just like your work — they see it as a valuable part of their routine or interests. They subscribe because they don't want to miss out on what you create next. Once you grasp this concept, you can change the way you make content and take advantage of the piqued interest of your audience. Here’s how to easily make that happen: The next time you’re coming up with ideas for content, consider creating a series. A multi-part content series is made up of smaller parts that on their own provide value, but together, provide even more. When a series is done right, subscriptions can fly through the roof. Why? Because by the inherent nature of a series, there's a built-in “what comes next?” factor and an implied “must subscribe” call to action. Take, for example, Ryan Trahan’s Penny Series on YouTube: Ryan survived with only a penny for one week. If you happened to catch his first video for Day 1 (out of 7), there was no way you were going to miss the next. And in case you didn’t notice, Day 1 has 24 million views. Ryan’s Penny Series has been so successful that he expanded it into other series, like his “turning a penny into a house” trade-up series, and several others. Then there’s Chris from InvolvingChris, who showed us what it was like to start an ecommerce store selling socks. His multi-part series blew up as well: And here’s a comment showing the power of wanting to know what comes next: Recently, I’ve been creating a series as well, challenging myself to finish a particular set of Pokémon cards in just 151 minutes for my Pokémon channel. Part 2 (out of 3) was published last week, and the views are already higher than the first video in the series: Back in the day on the SPI blog, our income report series was wildly popular and a major reason why people subscribed to the blog. They knew a new report was coming every single month, making it well worth the subscription. So instead of one-off pieces of content, think about creating a series. Sharing each installment can even become event-like in nature, creating your own “I can’t wait to see the next one” factor with your audience. Honestly, you won’t even need to ask people to subscribe, because they’ll want to anyway. Real quick before we wrap, here’s a careful consideration with this approach: don’t divide and devalue an existing piece of content just so it fits the series narrative (i.e. chopping one piece of content up into smaller, less valuable pieces., And definitely don’t leave your audience hanging by not fulfilling promises in the content you’re publishing. Instead, consider how to take people on a journey — one where each piece is inherently valuable and can stand on its own, but when viewed together becomes something even better.
