A bruised ego can heal quickly when seemingly unpleasant feedback is viewed as constructive criticism, SmartBrief Senior Leadership Editor Candace Chellew writes. "Sometimes people use sarcasm or snark to get their point across because they don't know how to express themselves differently, or they're reacting from their own ego in the moment and hit send in haste," Chellew notes. Retired US Navy Admiral William McRaven led the special forces unit that killed Osama bin Laden, but in a recent speech to the National Association of College and University Business Officers, McRaven says his toughest job was as the chancellor of the University of Texas system as he dealt with everyone from legislators, to faculty, donors and regents. "The president has got to be able to manage all of that, and nobody ever seems completely satisfied," McRaven says. Full Story: [Inside Higher Ed]( (7/18)

Scientists may have solved mystery of gullies on Mars (Photo 12/Getty Images)
Gullies on the surface of Mars may have formed when the planet was tilted on its axis to around 35 degrees and undergoing climatic shifts, researchers propose in a study published in Science. The gullies are located at heights where liquid water is unlikely to exist on Mars today, but researchers believe that during periods of high axial tilt, the climate supported water that flowed from melting ice and carved out the gullies. Lily's got a bone to pick (Susan Krug)
Susan Krug sent in this photo of Lily heading into Susan's office with big bone. "She usually sits at my side while I'm working but on this day she dug out one of her dog bones buried in our backyard," Susan says. That looks like a mighty big bone Lily has to pick with Susan. For good or for ill, I have long been one of those who believed that if you wanted a job done right, you should do it yourself. Thankfully, I have learned [the lesson Katie Anderson outlines](, and have recently delegated a lot of my responsibilities at the spiritual community I lead in South Carolina. I recommend learning this lesson early, because I had to reach the point of burnout before I relented and began to train others to assist me. Having the burden of so many chores lifted off my shoulders leaves me with more time to dedicate to strategy, visioning and ... time off. How are you at delegating and teaching new skills to your direct reports? [Tell me about it](mailto:candace.chellew@futurenet.com). What topics do you see in your daily work that I should know about? Do you have praise? Criticism? [Drop me a note](mailto:candace.chellew@futurenet.com). And don't forget to send me photos of your pets, your office and where you spend your time off.
