Although mentors can offer guidance, what women really need to advance their careers and break into senior leadership roles are sponsors who can use their influence to promote and support their proteges, says Ancestry CEO Deb Liu. Organizations may have an affinity bias, where leaders who are often men tend to sponsor individuals who look like them. To overcome this, Liu says companies should create formal sponsorship programs and encourage leaders to sponsor people who do not look like them, and women should build trust with mentors to convert them into sponsors.
