The wonder of working together [View in your browser]( [phone] +61 2 9255 0600 [Silversea Cruises]( Dear {NAME}, Bill Reid was a master storyteller. This artist, who was of Scottish, German and Haida heritage, not only used his own remarkable wood carvings to tell the stories of indigenous people of British Columbia but also became a champion of their art, which was nearly wiped out when they were forced to assimilate. Eric Lucasâ story on Reidâs work and his assessment of the masterpieces at the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver will give you a fresh sense of the importance of Reidâs artistic genius and how it connects travelers to this region of the world. For me, it's a great reason to spend a few days in Vancouver, pre- or post-cruise, to absorb how his art informs the region's culture. On another note â and I'm now thinking of a spot in neighboring Alaska, just a little more than 1,100 miles northwest of Vancouver â the Anan Bear and Wildlife Observatory near Wrangell tells a different story of survival. This one illuminates the difference between brown and black bears -- a revelation to me. The two species are not best friends, but we take you "behind the lens" to show you both similarities and differences. Fascinating, right? Stay curious. Warmest Regards, Barbara Muckermann

BRITISH COLUMBIA]( Artist Bill Reidâs âThe Raven and the First Menâ is an amazing sculpture and a story unto itself. It started as more than 100 beams of cedar and became a 4.5-ton masterpiece thatâs like a beacon at the UBC Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver. You also can see another beautiful piece of his, âThe Spirit of Haida Gwaii, the Jade Canoeâ (photo above by Tony Hisgett/Wikimedia Commons) at the Vancouver airport as youâre arriving for your cruise or returning afterward. It immediately infuses you with a sense of who he was and his importance. The question youâll come away with wonât be âCould I do this kind of work?â but âDo I have a bit of Bill Reid in me?â [READ ARTICLE]( ) [VIEW VOYAGES]( [To the Curious]( [BEARS' NECESSITIES? LOTS OF SALMON]( Fat Bear Week in Alaska took place a few weeks ago and was definitely trending on social. What's fascinating is the detail, and we showcase this in our âBehind the Lensâ video about how these bears have to shore up, storing food for a fallow time. This year, a 20-year-old bear named â747,â also known as âBear Force One,â took the crown as fattest bear. On your next trip to Alaska, even in the summer season, you may have a different perspective on the life cycles of a bear, black, brown or otherwise.
