theCUBE has analyst-led discussions, real-world insights and more [Analysts ready for Data Cloud Summit: Reframing the future of data platforms]( In this week’s Analysis]( theCUBE Research analysts Dave Vellante and George Gilbert share how they see the next data platform, sometimes called the 6th data platform, evolving. They give a preview of what to expect at Snowflake's Data Cloud Summit this week, including the company’s response to metadata catalogs, the integration of Snowpark and new application developments.   Snowflake is at a pivotal moment as the company faces new challenges in the evolving data platform landscape. Known for its innovative data cloud vision and superior integrated data platform, Snowflake now seeks to lead in AI and data applications. However, market forces are pressuring its core values of simplicity, efficiency and trusted data.   Snowflake competing in new markets   The shift toward open storage formats and data catalogs, alongside the AI revolution, test Snowflake’s ability to extend its value proposition and compete in new markets. To succeed, the company must flawlessly execute both organic and inorganic innovation while attracting new developer personas and maintaining profitability. “Snowflake has been talking about adding gen AI more pervasively,” Vellante said. “As the modern data platform is redefined, Snowflake risks jumping from the frying pan into the fire, depending on how it adds gen AI to its product. Snowflake has the strongest engine, but competitors who make specialized tools to serve business analysts, data scientists, data analysts and end users may be best positioned to add gen AI.”    [Catch the latest updates live from Data Cloud Summit on theCUBE](   Tune in to theCUBE this week for live coverage of Snowflake’s [Data Cloud Summit](. [Get the free report]( [On theCUBE Pod: The battle for data governance supremacy]( In the latest [theCUBE Pod]( theCUBE Research analysts John Furrier and Dave Vellante discuss how Snowflake is currently at a pivotal moment in the company’s history. Vellante and Furrier also look into the implications of Databricks' Unity Catalog, a governance engine for open table formats that disrupts traditional data ownership models.   Vellante highlights Snowflake's challenge of maintaining data governance and simplicity while considering the shift to open table formats such as Iceberg. This shift threatens Snowflake's proprietary moat, as embracing open formats could expose its intellectual property.   “We've been saying scale wins, and if you have an IT or software estate install base, you can leverage that,” Furrier said. “Before anyone codes a line of code around AI, if governance isn't built into the data modeling, there's no real value. Otherwise, they won't release it because of compliance reasons. It's a very nuanced point, but data governance is now the new key ingredient before data is released.”   Meanwhile, mixed earnings reports from companies such as UiPath and MongoDB underscore market uncertainties, with AI and hardware excitement juxtaposed against a real slowdown in software spending and market hesitancy. The evolving landscape of data management and the intricate balance companies must navigate in the generative AI era were also a big part of their conversation.   Read more on the conversation on this week’s theCUBE Pod.
