They also discuss AWS' missed opportunity in acquiring OpenAI, which bolstered Microsoft's position in the market.   “Jassy made a good call, and I think Selipsky should be commended,” Furrier said. “I've got to say every single meeting I was in, he was on point. He was like, ‘I think more sales and marketing,’ not a product-led CEO. He was customer-led. They need a product-led CEO. I think Garman brings that to the table.”   The Evolving role of data management in AI   The conversation also explores the advancements in AI models and the strategic shifts major tech companies are making to stay competitive. This is marked by the evolving role of data management as companies embrace technological innovation to maintain a competitive edge.   Check out the latest theCUBE Pod. Here's the week's top stories If anyone thought Google was going to continue to lose ground to Microsoft and OpenAI in the artificial intelligence era, its I/O conference this week in Mountain View proved that perception is premature at best. [Read more]( siliconangle.com [Power play in hybrid AI: IBM and Dell in focus]( In this week’s episode of Analysis]( Dave Vellante, chief analyst at theCUBE Research, highlights the impact of the Microsoft-OpenAI partnership, which has driven a significant capital expenditure surge in cloud computing and AI infrastructure.   Last quarter, AWS, Google, Microsoft and Meta invested around $40 billion primarily for GPUs and AI infrastructure, marking a shift toward hybrid AI. This approach balances on-premises and public cloud workloads, addressing data locality, sovereignty, compliance and privacy concerns.   “As cloud-first remains hybridized, i.e., a more balanced approach between on-prem and public cloud workload placement, we believe a similar pattern will emerge with AI, and more specifically what we're calling hybrid AI,” Vellante said. “Our data shows that public cloud growth for AI workloads is going to continue to expand at a significantly faster pace than those on-prem workloads.”   An evolving AI landscape   The episode spotlights IBM and Dell as key players poised to benefit from the AI wave, supported by strong financial performance and strategic positioning in hybrid AI environments. Dell's remarkable stock performance and IBM's robust market presence, despite legacy challenges, underscore their pivotal roles in this evolving landscape.   “Dell is a completely different animal than IBM, although they are birds of a feather that they're going after the hybrid model,” Vellante said. “Dell's legitimate claim is they are really the most substantial and maybe one of the only end-to-end infrastructure technology companies from laptops to servers to storage with a large portfolio that stretches from data centers to the cloud and all the way out to the edge.”   Read more of Dave Vellante’s Breaking Analysis.
