What's in your freezer? Now that it feels like summer is approaching in earnest, I’m starting to see frozen desserts everywhere I look. Ice cream trucks (including one that blasts an uniquely unsettling kids’ choir version of “Happy Birthday”) circle the park, battling for the spots closest to the playground. A man selling frozen mango dipped in Tajin has posted up on my block. When the man who pulls a freezer-box of paletas behind his bike passes, they exchange a solemn nod. Frozen treats are their business and its a competitive one. It’s also the time of year that I, accordingly, begin to stock my own freezer with intention. Currently, there are cubed bananas and strawberries ready to be blitzed into a smoothie, some dumb push-pops that I loved when I was a kid, Vietnamese iced coffee-flavored mochi and, of course, a pint or two of Jenni’s ice cream. I also have an embarrassingly large assortment of ice cube trays — ranging from a flexible silicone option that makes the most perfect giant ice cube you’ve ever seen, to a brittle plastic tray that turns out dachshund-shaped cubes — but that’s a discussion for another day. This week for The Bite, Salon Food’s weekly newsletter, I’ve pulled some of my stories about good, cold treats, ranging from iced coffee to a beautiful ice cream loaf.
