There's a new Trump in town For much of his tenure, "Saturday Night Live" struggled to parody former President Donald Trump — after all, his unique mannerisms, bizarre asides and nasal tone were often quite funny without needing any interpretation or dialing up. But now, it seems the long-running comedy show may have finally figured the man out, with new cast member James Austin Johnson stealing the show as Trump during this week's cold open. It's not exactly new territory for Johnson, who went viral for his impressions of Trump on Twitter before "SNL" called him up. The wide-ranging sketch also featured another new impression, as Alex Moffat took on Glenn Youngkin's victory in Virginia ("What is critical race theory?" Moffat is asked — "Doesn't matter," he responds, "It's what got me elected"). [Watch the sketch](~/AASU4wA~/RgRja5ZQP0RjaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2Fsb24uY29tLzIwMjEvMTEvMDcvc2F0dXJkYXktbmlnaHQtbGl2ZS1oYXMtYS1uZXctZG9uYWxkLWltcHJlc3Npb24vP3VzZXJfaWQ9KnxFTUFJTHwqVwNzcGNCCmGBUxGJYaV92ThSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg1QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAKA~~). (Photo via NBC/Screengrab) The latest viral trend? Quitting your job In one text, an employee tells their boss to mail them their final check. Someone else says they're simply never going back to work. Another tells their manager, with finality, to "Eat. My. Ass." You've probably seen posts like these across social media, where workers — usually in low-paid service gigs — blast their bosses and leave once and for all. People flood the comments sections with messages of congratulations and stories of their own workplace horrors. These viral screeds are perhaps the most public evidence of what pundits have taken to calling the "Great Resignation," as Americans (and really the entire developed world) reassess their relationship to labor. "There's a short-term story of what's happening post COVID," one labor expert told Salon, "but it's couched in the long-term story of what has happened over the last 40 years. People are saying enough is enough." It's time to embrace "degrowth" Economic growth has been the political goal of the last few centuries, something that our entire lives have been organized around for generations. But it's that same expand-at-all-costs mentality that has caused a number of our current crises — most importantly, a worldwide environmental breakdown caused by a changing climate. Only one thing can save us now, the environmental anthropologist and author [Peter Sutoris argues for Salon](~/AASU4wA~/RgRja5ZQP0SJaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2Fsb24uY29tLzIwMjEvMTEvMDcvaW5maW5pdGUtZWNvbm9taWMtZ3Jvd3RoLWNhdXNlZC10aGUtZW52aXJvbm1lbnRhbC1jcmlzaXMtZGVncm93dGgtd2lsbC1oZWxwLXVzLWZpeC1pdC8_dXNlcl9pZD0qfEVNQUlMfCpXA3NwY0IKYYFTEYlhpX3ZOFIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODVAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAAo) this weekend: degrowth. Yes, it may scare some economists and lead to some less-than-enthusiastic chyrons on Fox News, but it's the only thing that save the human species from catastrophe in the long term. "In order for the idea of degrowth to become more central to our society's response to the environmental crisis, we need to re-imagine our relationship with our planet," Sutoris writes. "Seeing ourselves as stewards, rather than masters, of nature and recognizing the right of future generations to live on a living, not dying, planet, will help us get there." "Our political leaders will only recognize the common sense of degrowth when departing from the dogma of infinite growth would no longer mean political suicide for them. I'm talking, of course, about the Trump campaign's dying gasp, which came at an incredibly bizarre press conference held outside a lawn-care business called Four Seasons Total Landscaping (Trump, if you'll remember, tweeted that the press conference would be held at the "Four Seasons, Philadelphia," presumably meaning the famous luxury hotel chain with the same name). One year later, MSNBC gave us "Four Seasons Total Documentary," a look into the events of that day through the eyes of the employees who approved the event and the people who were there that day. "Watching Trump's presidency end in front of a garage door next to some coiled yellow hose was kind of like the emperor-has-no-clothes moment for the Trump campaign, you know?" the film's director, Christopher Stoudt, told Salon's Melanie McFarland during a recent interview. "It just sort of let us finally peek behind the curtain and see reality for what it was."  [Hear more from Stoudt](~/AASU4wA~/RgRja5ZQP0RraHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2Fsb24uY29tLzIwMjEvMTEvMDcvZm91ci1zZWFzb25zLXRvdGFsLWRvY3VtZW50YXJ5LW1zbmJjLWNocmlzdG9waGVyLXN0b3VkdC8_dXNlcl9pZD0qfEVNQUlMfCpXA3NwY0IKYYFTEYlhpX3ZOFIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODVAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAAo) about that fateful day, which he calls "one of the funniest things that I've ever seen." Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
