[Why Apu hasnât had a line in three years](
âThe Simpsonsâ longtime writer and producer, Mike Reiss, explains why and how the show handled criticism of the character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, the Indian Kwik-E-Mart owner voiced by white actor Hank Azaria. Controversy surrounding Apu was re-ignited recently when a documentary created by comedian Hari Kondabolu,âThe Problem with Apu,â addressed how the Apuâs portrayal is racist. âWe addressed it on the show two years before him. We knew there was a problem,â Reiss told Salonâs Amanda Marcotte. âFor three years, Apu hasnât had a line in âThe Simpsons.â And there was even an episode that addressed the offensive nature of the character.â Reiss goes on to explain how handling Apu is still âan ongoing problem.â âIt's not cut and dry,â Reiss said. âIt's not like the public is 100 percent against Apu.â Reissâs new book âSpringfield Confidential: Jokes, Secrets, and Outright Lies from a Lifetime Writing for The Simpsons,â is a behind-the-scenes look at the Simpsons characters and explains how the writersâ room has evolved over 29 seasons. [How Michael K. Williams masters acting](
While reflecting on his acting process, Emmy-nominated actor Michael K. Williams shared with SalonTV how playing Omar on HBOâs âThe Wire,â which ended a decade ago, had a long-lasting impact on his career as an actor. âOmar was in my DNA,â Williams told Salonâs D. Watkins on âSalon Talks.â During the span of the eight year run of âThe Wire,â Williamsâ didnât realize the toll the character was taking on him. âI was like, oh, wait, I'm in the deep end of the pool emotionally speaking in character building,â he said. âThat character still stayed with me.â For Williams, exploring the ugly side of characters, has become a career choice. âI try to not get in my own way and be honest and ugly and show that ugliness. Hopefully someone will see that and find redemption,â Williams said. As far as honing his craft, Williams explains how he benefits from going deep into himself to find characters. âI'm tapping my subconscious,â he said. âI ask for the truth about a character to come to meâin that my psyche gets put aside. It helps me to consciously make a decision to get out of my way.â Check out the [full interview]( to learn more about Williamsâ latest role, Scatter, in the new film âSuperFlyâ and why heâs getting involved in mass incarceration reform in a big way. [Taye Diggs](
Actor Taye Diggs returns to his favorite movie genre, romantic comedy, in Netflixâs new film "Set It Up.â He joined âSalon Talksâ to discuss how he prepared for his character, Rick, a total jerk, and a big departure from his sweet spot playing the likeable love interest on screen. âSet It Up,â which feels like a throwback to rom-coms of the 2000s, centers around a romance between Diggsâ character and Liu, who also plays an uptight executive. Their relationship is masterfully designed by their overworked assistants. "I've been lucky to be in this business for a minute and I've been a part of stories that have been re-used. This is a refreshingly original idea," Diggs told Salonâs Rachel Leah. "That's why playing that character was so great,â Diggs added, âbecause I got to be the person that I'm afraid to be in real life.â The âRentâ and "Private Practice" star has a slew of other projects in the works. He's starring in a new football-centered sitcom called "All American," out this fall on CW, is directing for the stage, and is in the process of publishing his third children's book, which centers on his personal experiences of co-parenting after divorce. Watch the full interview above to hear Diggs open up about having tough conversations with his son, the changing landscape of TV and Hollywood, and his take on the #MeToo movement.
