[Amanda Brugel of "The Handmaid's Tale"](
If fans of the [first season of "The Handmaid's Tale"]( who had read the original novel felt they could exhale because they knew what was coming, they'll find no such relief [this season,]( which just debuted on Hulu. Deviating from Margaret Atwood's dystopian classic, the story now goes in entirely new directions â including offering more insight into the Waterford's enigmatic Martha, Rita. Actor Amanda Brugel, who plays Rita, told Salonâs Mary Elizabeth Williams on "Salon Talks" how this season reflects our current reality. "There's a constant undercurrent of the abuse of power," she said. "But not unlike the MeToo movement, there's such a theme of resistanceâ¦. I don't know if the movement's leading our journey or it's us going hand in hand with the political climate, but it just seems that we are feeding into each other." And after working in the industry for years, she appreciates how special "Handmaid's Tale" is. "To be on a program where you're thrust into the zeitgeist, you have an impact on so many people," she said. "People are wearing costumes from the show when they're [going to protests.]( It means that you've connected with people on such a visceral level that is so rare." Watch the video above to hear how "The Handmaid's Tale" changed Brugel's life long before the series launched, and why she dropped out of the acting game for four years. [Salon goes to Sesame Street](
Salon writer Matthew Rozsa visits the set of "Sesame Street" to talk to Elmo and the show's first-ever Muppet with autism, Julia, who made her TV debut in 2017. Julia, whose episodes have aired around the world, is part of Sesame Workshop's whole autism initiative called See Amazing in All Children. Rozsa talks to Julia about what it is like being a muppet with autism and reveals his own childhood experiences with bullying, which he says might have been less severe if a character like Julia had existed on TV in the 1990s. Watch the video above to see Salon's special behind-the-scenes trip to Sesame and to hear more from Sherrie Westin, the executive vice president of global impact and philanthropy for "Sesame Street" â and the force behind Julia. Plus read more about Rozsa's [reflections]( on understanding how Julia can help everyone understand autism better.
[Antonio Banderas' passion for Picasso](
Acting superstar Antonio Banderas joined Salonâs D. Watkins to discuss one of the most important roles of his career, the prolific artist Pablo Picasso. Banderas proudly portrayed the title role of one of the 20th centuryâs most influential and celebrated artists on the second installment of NatGeoâs âGeniusâ seriesâ âGenius: Picasso,â which premiered April 24 on the National Geographic channel. Banderas, who was born in the same Spanish town as Picasso, reflect on his time living in America. âFor me, America was, and it still is, you know, in a way, an adventure, a personal, vital adventure, that I had to live for 20 something years,â Banderas told Salon. âAnd I learned very much, for me, to heed the many different type of genres, for example, here, probably, it couldn't have been possible to do that in Spain because Spain is restricted in the budget that they have for movies and all the arts and movies are coming out of Spain, you know?â Check out the clip above to learn more about Banderasâ immigration story and how Picassoâs aura has stayed with him even after filming stopped. Watch SalonTVâs [full interview]( to hear how Banderas and co-star Alex Rich, who plays a young Picasso, worked together to create different versions of the artist for the Genius series.
