I stumbled my way into the rug hooking world through the Classifieds section of Country Living magazine (new at that time). There I found a reference to Braid Aid, the venerable company that had been established in the late 1940s as the go-to source for rug braiding supplies, and which also became a supplier to the rug hooking community. After ordering and then poring over their catalog, I was convinced that rug hooking would become important to me, so much so that I have never forgotten the total cost of the supplies I ordered. $487. No small change in 1982! And so it began. I taught myself to hook (lots of trial and error) and became confident enough in my craft to try hooking faces. This later became the focus of my teaching career. Hooking faces married my newfound passion of rug hooking with my fine arts background and drawing ability. I had decades of experience with portraiture. I knew how to closely observe an object or subject in an analytical way—a critical skill for the special challenge of hooking a face. As I became comfortable with hooking faces, I identified and compiled some fundamental principles that formed the basis of the classes I taught at workshops across the country. I owe so much to all the wonderful people I met and to their willingness to learn and grow with me. We had so much fun in the process. Sometimes too much fun, as when our riotous laughter caused us to be admonished by a teacher in an adjoining classroom. Now that I no longer teach, I want to make these well-tested principles available to everyone. I always began my classes by emphasizing that within the group there was a wide range of experience, skills, and confidence. My goal was for every individual in the class to feel that they had learned something and made progress and in doing so, had experienced satisfaction. As it is with this book. The goal of sharing my accumulated knowledge is that, starting wherever you are, you will gain confidence, make progress, and experience the great satisfaction of hooking a portrait. And maybe— hopefully—be thrilled with the results. If you missed the chance to participate in Tish Murphy’s popular workshop on how to hook faces, this book is the next best thing. With deep knowledge, a generous attitude, and a dose of good humor, Tish teaches you what to look for to plan a hooked portrait, as well as the particular techniques you’ll need to complete a project. If you’ve never hooked a portrait before, this is the place to start. If you have experience hooking faces, this book will take your art to the next level. In this book, discover all the necessary skills for hooking a face, illustrated with step-by-step photos and beautiful finished pieces: - Drawing the Pattern - Dyeing the Wool Palette - The Basics Feature by Feature - Characters, Caricatures, Icons, and Variations - And many more!
