Q: What should the width of the sink cabinet be? I noticed it's recommended to not go over a 30" width, but most double sinks are 30" wide. I measured a few different sink cabinets and all of them are 36" wide. Thoughts? -Mark R. My recommendation for 30" maximum isn't an exact number. You could make the distance between the partitions a little wider, and you'd be fine. My reasoning behind this recommendation springs from my observation that countertops will often start to sag over time when they are not supported close enough to the edge. For instance, when, say, a 30" sink is supported by partitions that are substantially wider, the overhang of the countertop on each side can bend downwards over time. The ideal overhang depends on the type of countertop construction. How does all this work with the design you envision? Are you thinking of using a 30" sink? What sort of cabinet length and countertop design do you have in mind? If you send me some sketches I can make specific recommendation for you. Q: I don’t have a power nailer, but I do have a drill. Would there be any reason not to install the boxes with screws? I also have a Kreg jig for pocket holes and thought about doing it that way. I just know it’s going to be difficult to hand nail the boxes together will trying to keep everything lined up. -Chaz C. Well, the problem with screws is that they can cause the plywood to swell and split across its thickness. This doesn't always happen, but it can be disappointing when it does cause an unsightly bulge. Pocket screws are great things, and you could use them for these cabinet boxes. The problem is that it takes a lot longer to use them than finishing nails. Predrilling for the nails, then setting the nails into the holes before the parts come together makes the job pretty much the same as using an air nailer. One hand holds the parts together while the other hand drives the nails. Having some help during assembly makes things a lot easier, too. Q: I really appreciate your patience, experience and dedication to the cabinetry craft! I think I am ready to go for it and will refer back often. Thank you, it's been a lot of fun and I wish you the best with your next class! -David D. Hello David! Thanks for your kind words. I'm very glad that you found the class worthwhile.
