Google is being questioned by the US government for other reasons, too. As part of its [landmark antitrust case](%2F%2Fqz.com%2Fjustice-department-pushes-ahead-with-antitrust-case-aga-1850835093%2F%3Futm_source=email%26utm_medium=Quartz_Daily_Brief_US%26utm_content=1850837201/1/0100018a93235d33-14290650-6740-4009-b199-d4a31bef0ee4-000000/0bjnbQDWvcBrCg4U-T77LzverLYwwL_Sy1ycpKdHiRg=318) against the tech giant, the US Department of Justice talked to a former employee who negotiated default search engine deals. What to think about inflation Deep breath, Americans. The Consumer Price Index (CPI, to you, probably) rose by 0.6% from July to August. And then, even scarier sounding, it rose 3.7% from August 2022 to August 2023. When this happens, youâre always going to see headlines about how inflation has increased. But the 12-month average of the overall CPI measure doesnât tell the whole story. [Nate DiCamillo gives us some much-needed context](%2F%2Fqz.com%2Fus-inflation-not-speeding-up-again-1850833749%2F%3Futm_source=email%26utm_medium=Quartz_Daily_Brief_US%26utm_content=1850837201/1/0100018a93235d33-14290650-6740-4009-b199-d4a31bef0ee4-000000/q81J8r2dMp8eB8smCy6E46L2tZ1uhIyNHGXQRYJDzDY=318) about why the numbers look the way they do, and why we can relax a little about the future, starting with these points: â½ Fuel prices went up a whopping 10.6% in the last month, and theyâre set to go higher ðï¸ Rent inflation is continuing to cool, though ð Used car prices are coming down too, although, to be fair, not nearly fast enough for anyoneâs liking Got a license for that AI? âYou canât drive a car until you get a license. You canât make the model or the application available until you pass through that gate.â âMicrosoft president Brad Smith at a US Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Sept. 12 US lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and leaders in the tech industry all seem to be in agreement that there needs to be some sort of guardrails on developing AI. A solution could be found in licensing. A quick look at whoâs wrecking the planet! A new report by research and advocacy group Oil Change International identified 20 countries responsible for nearly 90% of new oil and gas extraction projects between 2023 and 2050. At the top of this list of âplanet wreckers,â as OCI calls them, are the following five usual suspects, but Clarisa Diaz has [charted the full 20](%2F%2Fqz.com%2F20-countries-planet-wreckers-oil-gas-report-1850831226%2F%3Futm_source=email%26utm_medium=Quartz_Daily_Brief_US%26utm_content=1850837201/1/0100018a93235d33-14290650-6740-4009-b199-d4a31bef0ee4-000000/E95F7BXNKuIl0bSlYBH5-OZF9zd99IyVtTgOW6YUdWE=318), which contains some surprises. If the planet wreckers are allowed to continue in this vein, says the report, holding global temperature rise to 1.5°C would be impossible. %2F%2Fqz.com%2Femails%2Fdaily-brief%2F1850837201%2Fstrong-arm-tactics%2F/4/0100018a93235d33-14290650-6740-4009-b199-d4a31bef0ee4-000000/sN4RziwPF8HxL0teVIdSuBXUCnPU0i9qXUI1XldlkLo=318 Graphic: (Clarisa Diaz) Stopping new oil and gas would not be enough, according to the authors.
