Will Richmond | Managing Editor Communities & R.I. [@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at [The Providence Journal]( and this is the Daily Briefing. If you're of a certain age, the idea of a private eye may evoke certain memories. Television shows that placed the detectives for hire in the shadows as they watched their subjects. Maybe it's the idea of being tailed by a suspicious vehicle. The thought of a comedy like John Candy's "Who's Harry Crumb" could crack a smile on your face. But what's it like away from the big screen and in real life? Are private detectives â and no, we're not talking about internet sleuths sitting at a desk â still really a thing? The answer is, they certainly are. The Journal's Tom Mooney recently spent time with Charles Galligan, whose gregarious nature, gets those he encounters talking. [Private detective Charlie Galligan. Sept. 2024] Private detective Charlie Galligan. David DelPoio/The Providence Journal How did Galligan get started and what keeps him in the game? [Here's what Tom found out.]( ⢠After 7 years, Jennifer Hawkins has left her post as CEO of One Neighborhood Builders, but what a 7 years it was. During that time, among other things, she reoriented the nonprofit, especially to focus on building apartments at single sites, rather than the previous tactic of scattered buildings in a neighborhood. [The Journal's Wheeler Cowperthwaite recently caught up with Hawkins to look at the legacy she leaves behind.]( ⢠Last year, Quidnessett Country Club illegally built a 600-foot seawall without the Coastal Resources Management Council's permission. After getting caught, the club hired the CRMC's former chair as its attorney, and petitioned the coastal regulator to change its rules. Now, as [The Journal's Antonia Farzan reports]( the closely-watched saga is proving to be the latest example of how the CRMC's politically-appointed council isn't always aligned with the agency's professional staff. ⢠The Providence school district confirmed Wednesday that an âanonymous groupâ hacked into the cityâs school district computer network two weeks ago and may hold files containing personal information, admitting for the first time that the incident was a cyberattack. But why have they been so quiet about the incident? [The Journal's Tom Mooney talked to an expert to find out.]( ⢠Two big stages await the Providence women in their Big East meetings with a national power this season. [The Journal's Bill Koch has the details on the Friars' upcoming conference schedule.]( More from The Providence Journal [Find the latest obituaries here.]( [Subscribers can read the eNewspaper here.]( WORTH A READ ð° [Americans' faith in the First Amendment is waning](. Research has revealed the states with the most students studying abroad, with Rhode Island taking the 10th spot. Experts at the travel site [Miss Tourist]( examined data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center and the Institute of International Education to find the number of college-enrolled students in each state and the number of US students studying abroad in the 2021/22 academic year. Each state was ranked based on the percentage of the student population that studied abroad that year.
