The center of the structure spanning the mainland and Conanicut Island was gone in a poof of smoke, taking seconds to fall into the water below. If you were hoping the same would happen for the troubled westbound side of the Washington Bridge, you're out of luck. Instead, you may not have realized the work has already begun and the bridge will be removed in pieces through the remainder of the year. Just how will it happen? [01_barges_08292024.JPG] The state has set up barges in the river for the equipment that will be used to demolish the Washington Bridge westbound side and they are doing some work to start demolition.
