Lynne Sullivan | Regional Executive Editor [@LSullivan73]( Despite the fact that my husband and I are both journalists, my children rarely discuss the "news" with us. So on the rare occasions when they do come to us with news, we certainly perk up. My son came home from work the other day and said, "Wow, Mom, do you know that a football coach died the other day?" He was talking about Arthur Bell, who had coached at Middletown High school for nine years, with previous stops at Portsmouth High, Rogers High, Salve Regina University and Portsmouth Abbey. Ian is a student at URI, so a bunch of his friends had been posting to social media about their sadness at such a loss. Turns out I did, in fact, know that Bell had passed. You can learn more about Bell's career and community impact [in Jake Rousseau's story here](. But it got Ian talking about coaches he had and how he'd feel if they died. He told me stories I had never heard before, and I realized how much of a lasting impact these men and women had on my son. We give teachers a lot of (well-deserved) credit for shaping our kids' minds and behaviors, but coaches can't be ignored. They spend an awful lot of time with our children, and perhaps even more than in the classroom, they see our children at their highest and lowest moments â times when the coaches' influence is even more important. At their best, coaches are a model for our kids of how to carry themselves in these highest of high and lowest of low moments. Of Bell, Portsmouth coach Keith MacDonald said, âHe influenced a lot of people. A lot of coaches, a lot of players, and we are all for the better. We are better by being touched by him.â What a legacy. More from The Providence Journal [Find the latest obituaries here.]( [Subscribers can read the eNewspaper here.]( WORTH A READ ð Gross.
