[@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at [The Providence Journal]( and this is the Daily Briefing. It's been a long seven years waiting for Newport County Club to host the [U.S. Senior Open]( but today that wait is finally over. When it was first announced in 2017 that the tournament would be coming to Newport in 2020 who could have imagined a global pandemic getting in the way? Everything was in place when shutdowns started happening and it took until early April for the cancellation to be made, leaving disappointment and uncertainty about when or if the tournament would return. But here we are with the Open officially beginning with 7 a.m. tee times this morning. Already The Providence Journal staff has been on the course catching up with Rhode Islanders [Brett Quigley]( and [Billy Andrade]( as they prepared this week with practice rounds and we'll go beyond the leaderboard to bring readers full coverage and images from all four days of the tournament. [Billy Andrade] RI native Billy Andrade plays a practice round at Newport Country Club on Wednesday, ahead of the Thursday start to the U.S. Senior Open. Louis Walker III/Special to the Providence Journal [Keep an eye on our sports section for the latest from Newport all weekend.]( • Among the trolls and questionable content sometimes the internet truly proves its worth. [Here's what happened next.]( • If a team of consultants suggests it's time for the Providence school district to return to the city's control would city officials be ready? [The Journal's Tom Mooney reports on what Mayor Brett Smiley says it would take to be properly prepared.]( • The 2024 election season officially got underway this weekend with Wednesday's deadline to formally declare candidacy for office. While this year lacks high-profile statewide races seats there are plenty of battles for positions in the General Assembly. [The Journal's Katherine Gregg breaks down the races to highlight the biggest storylines to watch.]( • It may seem gross when you're swimming but seaweed is free, abundant and a valuable source of nutrients. Not to mention gathering it is protected in Rhode Island's constitution.
