In December 1987, when Somali farmer Farhan Warfaa was just 17, he was rounded up and brought to the Fifth Brigade of the Somali National Army headquarters for questioning. He was a member of the persecuted Isaaq clan. A man named Yusuf Abdi Ali headed the Fifth Brigade and led some of Warfaaâs interrogations, it is claimed. Eventually, Aliâs soldiers released Warfaa back to his family in exchange for a bribe. Warfaa thought heâd never get justice for the torture he endured.[Warfaa, now 48, will fly to the US under special immigration rules to come face-to-face with the former army chief](.
Also, the Swedish movement of [flygskam, or âflight shame,â]( has brought awareness to the toll that air travel has on the environment.
And nearly 50 years after the first Earth Day,[there's a lot more work to be done](, says Jonathan Pershing, the program director of environment at the Hewlett Foundation.
