Naipaul wrote in his novel A Bend in the River. “... the past can only cause pain.” Naipaul was talking about how to survive major movements in history, transformations of countries and cultures, but his advice applies as well to the changes in one’s lifetime. Ted Lasso, not a Nobel winner but better known, touched on a similar idea. "You know what the happiest animal on earth is?" Lasso tells a player who just made a mistake. "It’s a goldfish. You know why? It’s got a 10-second memory. Be a goldfish." The promise of a new year is that we get to start over. And it's not an empty promise, psychologists say. Temporal landmarks, like January first, "allow people to open 'new mental accounts' in the same way that a business closes the books at the end of the one fiscal year and opens a fresh ledger for the new year," Daniel Pink writes in When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing. "This new period offers a chance to start again by relegating our old selves to the past. It disconnects us from that past self's mistakes and imperfections, and leaves us confident about our new, superior selves." Starting again doesn't happen automatically, however. Pink recommends visualizing yourself transforming into a new person. But first, we have to trample our history. "It's hard to get a fast start when your self-image is stuck in the past," Pink says. For runners, that past may be a self-image of a dilatant who's never risked caring or established the discipline to grow to his or her potential, or it may be memories of a faster, stronger athlete. Either can stand in the way of seizing this new year's potential for growth and joy. I'm guilty of being stuck in demotivating comparisons with the past about nearly every aspect of my running. The voices in my head tell me I'm not measuring up, whatever the question: how much mileage is enough to feel good about, how long of a run is worth changing up for, how fast is a respectable pace, how much volume of speed work will make a difference, when am I fit enough to race... But it's a new year. Time to trample on the past (put all the training logs and racing history in deep storage), be a goldfish (forget what I used to do and what used to work), start with who I am today, and get to work becoming who I can visualize myself being (a kick-ass masters runner).
