We are replacing our deck, a project that has extended longer than anticipated, so the yard is a construction zone littered with trailers, sawhorses, and materials. But halfway through December, as the solstice approached and evenings started in mid-afternoon, I decided it was too gloomy not to hang the lights, and found time on a Saturday to decorate around and over the construction. To my surprise, as soon as the sun went down and the lights came on, the holiday cheer was in no way diminished. In fact, it felt even more magical given the contrast with the daytime view and my reduced expectations. What does this have to do with running? I've long held that racing is the celebration of our training, a sparkling string of minutes when we feel fast and fully alive. I also tend to think that races deserve proper preparation, that they dole out their rewards in proportion to my consistency and commitment, and it's not worth pinning on a number if I'm still in the midst of construction. Lately, however, I've felt that the construction may never end. I'll never get back to a training schedule or a level of fitness that feels adequate. But the few times I've laced up my racing flats lately have felt like the moment those lights blinked on: an awaking of emotions I thought I'd lost, barely dimmed by my less-than-ideal fitness. The race is still a celebration of being able to run, and provides a context where I exceed my daily reality, experience the best version of me, and taste what I can become with more work.
