Careful about your alcohol consumption. How to survive long-term injury. Add life to your years. More. Try polarized training to reach your peak The best measure of a training program is the sum of all parts, but little tweaks can make a difference too. The traditional approach is called âpyramidal trainingâ because it builds a big base of endurance training first and tops off the pyramid with a shorter, faster tip of speed training. âPolarized trainingâ is quite similar, as it still follows the general 80/20 rule (80 percent of training should be at a slow, comfortable pace), but finishes with a more dramatic split of very easy and very fast workouts as you peak. In a recent paper, researchers found that a âchange from pyramidal to polarized distribution maximized performance improvements.â David Roche went deep in his appreciation of the report with a long article at [Trail Runner.](113/cy08X04/MWNF8XBG7z3W5fn1gj2mR-KwW4KxtYX4BVs53N3Bm-7w5nCVBV3Zsc37CgH5LW5zklPy1Zm_ZPW7pNPcm2BlxGJN8FyT-MdVhd5W92Jfkl4KWW2bMwXddMV7_VhW2NwCyD7_9NR9TsL4K81gTqzVHCSr-7c_6Q2W6JWWJp25FRnZW5pbl4Z6jX8X_VCFBPX43dLD2W3sL6lD1hvb8VW6qMrwG8Rz2TlW14Bfs-7Ct9MKW516NVH77p9mdW555N3z72JFbNW8lbhcg8HRj-0W4v7J7T1V9wCsW8tWp9Q3lb_LLN8JqvfCpS8rXW2hGFqF30qBW2W1JTTCB4nt9J4W1wh-578w8M8wN74991FGx8FPW8C43Pz6RFvQ3W2z81R12wY6rrVSzc-Y3KYvphW6VPzH94Q5NWHW5-TRhl303jg_W959LWX7rktdVW7Fm9yd2gMXzmN9926-k3G-HLW8hLb4S7yH7tpW8ggh1f7GDyxwVR0bdm44-Kn3VkR53L1vh7R6W5864BH2D2jn2W51z22t3xmmhW3hHQ1) Stuck in the doorway (and thatâs a good thing) We all know that regular movement throughout the day is key to our health, whether an on-the-road tempo run, or the stretching and strengthening work (and laundry and vacuuming) that we do in our homes. Their subject group is one of the largest around (848 recreational runners), and their approach is âprospectiveâ rather than retrospective. Recently, they used a different view of ground reaction forces to explain why âsofterâ more cushioned shoes might reduce injuries vs harder shoes. They first reached this conclusion a year ago, finding that softer shoes were particularly helpful to lighter runners. One group ate a normal evening meal after the afternoon interval session. A second group fasted overnight. This second group performed better the next morning on an anaerobic (speed) test and also had a lower heart rate on a sub-max 60-minute test. Surprisingly, there was no difference between the two groups in terms of their fat-burning. The researchers termed the fasting groupâs method âperiodized carbohydrate availabilityâ and concluded that it âseems to enhance the ability to perform high-intensity exercise.â More from the European J. of Sport Science at the [RLRH webpage.](113/cy08X04/MWNF8XBG7z3W5fn1gj2mR-KwW4KxtYX4BVs53N3Bm-6D5nCTJV3Zsc37CgzLvW98Gypm3yrNffW5gZlWy2XdRvfN32NSr0cm4nzW2qbt4w5n6dGDW2gQqzV6wtRq3W352Q8P6cLs4ZW7jBZjX1yW1dZW3qN4QS7pQ4ysW3fDxHV6MvLRbVfhm1M2PNJxNW3JxKY-8vx-ryW1bmGhR2_M7lpW3mgDJn6QSWl7W8lPbzM519SL4W9fW8vr40QYkJW4G2hr96Brl8QW7PrTSR119SZXW1KPymG7cDs9vW1twBMz4TFShLW5KWrTN2V3f4gW74HHPw5pZ3Q_W60RK7Y3N5wC1W4zQgJg14sn1DW77BMBT4v6v9GW2Qnprb3LnLGPMyXklf-d72sW1XHVT53BM7XCN5s7MkWwLrDtN3hq5GNhQZygW1YngBd1d6dJVN8vg7lygmL_3VFSg0b1RvvM3315D1) Get faster with a variety of speed workouts To increase your running speed, you have to run faster some of the time. Not very often, and not very much. Usually during just 10% to 20% of your running. But that modest amount goes a long way toward helping you improve your fitness and speed. There are many ways to do speed work, ranging from highly structured intervals to highly-unstructured fartlek. The more you incorporate and vary these methods, the better. Hereâs a good outline of several such speed sessions. I canât think of a vitamin/supplement question more confusing than Vitamin D. Iâve never taken it because I run outdoorsânot on a treadmill, not in the dark. But I think Iâm ready to get on board. You donât have to do them every week, but maybe every other week during the crucial, several-months-to-go phase of your buildup. I favor comfortable long runs for the most part. But variety is good, and may boost your motivation to get out there and actually do those long runs. So you should consider the full range of long-run possibilities. Here youâll find 8 varieties. I donât like âfast finishâ long runs, but itâs hard to argue against the ânegative splitsâ approach. Itâs good for confidence-building. How to tell when itâs time for new shoes There are lots of things we love about our favorite running shoes, one of which is their ability to take a pounding and keep on ticking ⦠I mean, running. No one wants to buy a new pair after just 100 miles of use. Weâre often told to trade them in after 300 to 500 miles, but the better advice is to take really good care of them and to listen to your body. Donât stick your shoes in the sun or a dryer. Do let them dry out thoroughly when they get wet (by stuffing old newspaper inside and maybe directing a small fan on them.) And, of course, obey those body signals; itâs time for new shoes when youâre feeling too many aches and pains during/after a run in your old shoes. Maybe here: âPeople will ask you if itâs true you go to the bathroom in your pants to save time.â Or here: âChecking the weather will become your second job and regardless of what it says, youâll still run.â Youâll also want to add your own truisms to the list. Hereâs the first that came to mind for me (sorry, itâs not a joke-y one): âYouâll beg others to join you for at least part of your long run.â More from Run To The Finish at the [RLRH webpage.](113/cy08X04/MWNF8XBG7z3W5fn1gj2mR-KwW4KxtYX4BVs53N3Bm-6D5nCTJV3Zsc37CgFzYW8pl3g-39Q4N9W7vPKrj3qRn-1W1RStwH4TF7F2W7Gcn7N2gCyXlW9jdKvR84-R38W7LlvNW3ZsjpxW5G655b544D2_N77f6m2kW2jQW6GFMkx70d48cW8-nHVp6MKlJWVk05M83ydc-MN3cpgLGw2vqwW5ycZ-D8pcJKvW8RQlkZ4BsCPrW8WpbWk2tSbmQW4jsx_T6vl_8gW2Hc7XZ60fQ5KW33gsWB10qh6qW8TBC_954TRd2W2ZgvF38Zry8LW3jtLgw1Gdx9YW8m3HNT4J19F_N4PF9MxhSbJbW2GDPVp5jCQ8CW7z31Rx8gbHz4W4DbnQ_3cCs7lW56DpDg8SL5KbW8Tx5d71WN-NTW5X9LSv7bvxFrV5mGfR9dZyPrW14BWNF3mG8BBW4sjbVL20fP5m3jzp1) Add life to your years A recent Norwegian study of seniors over 70 reached a surprising-to-some conclusion when it found no big cardiovascular health differences between a control group of average Norwegians vs other groups that received supervised training programs, one of which included high-intensity workouts. In a posthoc analysis, the researchers suggested that the âaverageâ Norwegian is already so fit and healthy that itâs hard to improve them. The Boston Marathonâs co-medical director, Aaron Baggish, a frequent marathoner himself, agreed and pointed out an important, hidden message. âWhat exercise does, for the most part, is increase how well someone lives,â he noted. âItâs healthspan as opposed to lifespan.â Exercise adds life to your years, in other words, even if it doesnât add years to your life.
