Hurisa, the race organizers reported, "is said to have chosen the shoes for the race because he used them in training and thought they were within the rules." Put aside that the shoes he wore are [marketed](113/cy08X04/VW6Gwv6S8mK4W8MLgMn5DJhClW3Jh9SL4xsZYhN7TcW333q3phV1-WJV7CgGF5N9bQ_MfBlg66W5Q3v7r7N-3SQW2gShZV91HqYrW2Pb4Z83k0ZD-W6X_2jd1blhz-W2yWkrF4K4CwYW6sqGfQ96xqSQVNSNtx7JdCSSW8mCvRZ9kwvTgW5Phj3g85fVCyW3vXVHY6R8QCmW4HQW534tzWBnN2S5L71GTc-dN6qz9rrXWCVGW78bdYN7F_zg8W94bhl08r9sYtW7KGS6X2llTd8N3d7xvrn7BxKW6ypv_l1Qp5xvW2w7TPs2T1Dy5W579M3r77csdVW66LTNb52sV1sM9ZZzhrppGCW87T_mK9lm7rPW6njkxv36HkSmV8-fnj8FXHp8W7vdqW2189YknW3QXw1h3YR38y3ckW1) as "what’s possible when we throw the rule book away,” and the fact that he had to register what shoes he'd be wearing in the race (so he should have known that the specific model was important). Hurisa is a sponsored athlete and no doubt gets piles of shoes that he wears without giving much thought to what model they are. So, I'll take him at his word — and I find it sad that his efforts were nullified by ignorance (which is no excuse). What baffles me, however, is why he was ever training in them. Whether or not the shoes [provide a performance advantage](113/cy08X04/VW6Gwv6S8mK4W8MLgMn5DJhClW3Jh9SL4xsZYhN7TcW1B5nCT_V3Zsc37CgY2HW5CbMXQ6kMKNMN41D40jlVM0DW8dhG0R6k4cYmW86wnZ55FZ59KVdqfh38DVLrVW1VxTW14nSkXDW2VSx203k_43zW6ZYpCV5dTGD-W90Jkq_30TTghV3Z3Gf4326hLW1PtKJr6mVB5dW4QShxZ9893GTW6Wj8F75q75t7W3gwp8x7z1JZGVH1KT58c9xrkW55Lk2G5fypHmVChnMS463cCCW7cFllQ6-Szh3W16kRHS6QmDSPW2Kcvkt4lX3B9W4NkN4C7cH2rwW8Q_9lD35S22zW1l_5Jg4--qY6W3VPNDD848GH6W8kdBLM6qtSNDW1tV1w22PrKW8W7D7Y2V58HmVVW2XhBXQ32fRQqW4SlKb23qfPxsW1s1lYD32FKDRN8Mf0DF56bYtW4j9jRB13nCF8W4lPQt6770m66W76xTHP3J5blJ3n6j1), the 5 cm of super foam and multiple embedded rods and plates in the adidas adizero Prime X are designed to reduce energy expenditure. And training has one of two purposes: Either to stress your body so that it will adapt to a new level, or familiarize it with the specific neuromuscular patterns it will use on race day. Given that Hurisa couldn't wear this model on race day, he shouldn't be training in them for the purpose of specificity. And, the only reason to wear super shoes is to make it easier to run longer and faster. It's probable that Hurisa didn't do a lot of miles in them, but the temptation is there for all of us. If your training miles are easier, however, you're sabotaging the fitness you gain. All super shoes are proven to improve economy — and I can vouch from [wearing every version on the market](113/cy08X04/VW6Gwv6S8mK4W8MLgMn5DJhClW3Jh9SL4xsZYhN7TcW3m3q3pBV1-WJV7CgR8zN44zBdr71ZPJW1jv2-G8hmqq5N6My15fwJzX3W8hl4Qk1lM4rhW2-XWYn7r8gmjW2Dljzv6RG4hyW6Gt8-_1ZSSxkN3TJgNVFr8HBW65-mGs2l_YZRW1Kf_Ym5CFbXvW8M07Jc1dvMYhW2b3XJp4VpN1TW7bM1Tx7J3S2jW3J8bqB1rrKfJW91h3dm5JhPBBW9k4XJF1QBggnW1rnz3K57kh26W5kcPvG48yTccW8jpjnC7lTzc0W2mqslr5xDvYKW7NywjT81jX4-W48hBLy80mGkdW3n915F8cpqG3W34fKf04Tb1QYW3R6H1g9067KNW7sBXN41LjQPdW5v9bqK1MVqy3W2K1b9l21xvb9W78tc3x9f29szW26YfvP5CN4q538kP1) that they work, as evidenced by my watch saying my VO2 max goes up whenever I wear a super model. So while it is tempting to feel fast and get more miles with the same effort every day, it is counterproductive to the end goal. The goal is to make training as hard as you can handle, adapt to that stress, then use racing shoes to reduce the energy drain so you can go faster with less effort. Besides the short-term loss in training effectiveness, there's the question of whether you're robbing your body of essential strengths by using a crutch that lets running muscles atrophy. Every podiatrist or PT I've asked about shoes agrees on one thing: run in the least amount of shoe you can get away with. Jared Ward, who has helped design Saucony's super shoes, reports that he wears them sparingly in training. “I’m still not sure if shoes so rigid are good for long-term low-leg health,” Ward [told me last year](113/cy08X04/VW6Gwv6S8mK4W8MLgMn5DJhClW3Jh9SL4xsZYhN7TcW1h5nCTJV3Zsc37CgG3gW3YM0px7MrJ4vVpd1gY2zSZF3W6Gt90H7qGNg9N66wSJy-gBsZVPnG3X8VDK_DW3PtRsj1CS_l0Vfx0-Y4jh17-W3ZsKQS5jBZt9W72cTlW9c3Qx-W1tX4mr23NDJPW8nrkj75ThnT8W4ccH2V5VdLl7W7GJTZ81Sb8hcW7dM1gN6CSlMyV6TyGx1-tg9GW7p02Kz7SxV98VdkLrs5czZp-W8D1nqq3fxl08V-9W5f22lWXmW4_bw6249NyDwW3_685W41kYvwW8cKTXr1DC_gCW45_dcs4Fl_F5VflbKd1Frx1vW5-Fbq-1-1pzzMV59TnhdXqtW3w1rXG6YksRHW6frW2r2Rq678W6bpv-f9gm2W7N2Gbty5-hrFbW18d4hn8QD6WtW5KvVf425Xz-g3c8Y1). “So while I’m willing to race in a shoe that’s faster than another, I’m not ready to train in them too much yet. I’ve never done a long run in them, but I did do an 11-mile tempo in them the following week. The Saucony developer thinks there might be something to only racing in them (not training too much) to gain their advantage.” The bottom line is that there's no shortcut to getting stronger and faster. Your racing shoes will help you optimize your speed and strength on race day, but they can't give it to you — and if you reduce training stress by using them, you'll likely reduce training effectiveness too. So by all means, wear the fastest shoes you can find, but reserve them for race day and during key, specific workouts. That, and don't get used to illegal shoes and forget that they are prohibited on race day. Run tall, friends. — Jonathan Beverly, Editor PODIUMRUNNER [They Can Get You Disqualified, But Are Thicker Shoes Faster?](113/cy08X04/VW6Gwv6S8mK4W8MLgMn5DJhClW3Jh9SL4xsZYhN7TcW1B5nCT_V3Zsc37CgSfDW69Jq3L5fll4WW4QpFLy49QjXqW7tbWyP2NKFszW2ldjwP5_fClYW61LvSY46LWqpW476hd98WtWLKW4ZsHpg8W22kNW262ZF41tp534Vwp5M07DwnJVW2jb-pV3CpDnfW70fK2t1NRlw-W9lrF3d7FXB7QN62VplgqccR-W5XZF-M5FfLnKW2wVy082Z3x4GW4y4PhP3bdNCcW6Zd5p13rFpl1N78dGsN6KPrzW77NGnm7rFQ8TW4DXyP_362M4hW63QY-Z1GZjq1W5sC_4W5WgP84W5cK6TV1r8Z4nW4L1bRz76ZBY3W7GG__W2W9HTjW378S9r5-SrNLW24BBVN1YTv0pW2fsCj_4mNR08W64BTFS5WjrXnW96D09F3RV5gbW3vhFKS2SzKZCN1lXWHKPMMTJVD6_5x4TVtqhW8b9H838HkZ7F344s1) Sunday's disqualification of the Vienna Marathon's winner for wearing shoes that were 1cm thicker than allowed put the World Athletics's shoe rules center stage. It is indisputable that Hurisa broke the rules, but did he get any benefit from the taller shoes — and if not, should they be prohibited? We went to Geoffrey Burns, a biomechanist (and ultra runner) who first proposed the stack height limit, to understand the benefits and costs of expanding midsoles, and to explain the rational for limiting them. It's a natural tendency, and nearly-ubiquitous advice (you probably can hear an old coach's voice in your head urging you to attack the hill). But it is wrong. Dominating the hills won't get you to the finish line the fastest, if you sacrifice the rest of your race having to recover from the effort. Here's how to race hills more effectively. Why does it matter? Because when your balance and your biomechanics are on point, you’ll be able to run farther, faster, and with less effort and wear and tear on your body. Rather than doing random exercises or trying to match someone else's idea of how you should run, this course will take you through all you need to stabilize your joints, improve your balance, and run more efficiently, powerfully and durably. 113/cy08X04/VW6Gwv6S8mK4W8MLgMn5DJhClW3Jh9SL4xsZYhN7TcW1h5nCTJV3Zsc37CgQY0W34WtS-65bWgyW7QqnC96N1rr0W3fDyVt6BtkrcMCNL2TKLHH5W3RPb258QTpGhW8thn6W50_VnXW5DHTRC10j19gW7xXKWp73KGynVSy3sM2g1W3nVcwJYf70TwTQW4GsttY1D-kc3W8BkYdK8kf28nW1R-X8238dHHsW4z7S8b7FDRbCW2pB1z07LBwpFW24ZRTw4GVFxbW1p1KZt2XFy9TM7G28lxVw0TW4vtPJ69gYTvKN5wB1s2m9DtCW3zXr_45kQG4_W5SLf3V4gvMwnW4p0c4c1hxVghN3-Bj31D3fJKW1wfS5S2Lk84gW9j72Yk3ttyxdW3K3Ly28cXpLXW6hCtSv603QJ8W2K42l22fRqb4VB1XWQ3FyNNHW4-hFG57J8DWsVcNr_c4C3Md72Fr1 [Privacy Info](113/cy08X04/VW6Gwv6S8mK4W8MLgMn5DJhClW3Jh9SL4xsZYhN7TcW1h5nCTJV3Zsc37CgLkjW6yBy3K8XZ4crVNkt6_5_xBFdW2BvmgB5MwVJrN2-6ZVnjSYn3Vzpjfz915f1QN2Vh-90PqDslW3sCLNs84nySjW1v39fq14XVk9W3Z7DwG8gfprcW1__dBp5BB-9mW1JftNn6fjN-tVjqyYZ2dgB1cW4dgw_C622msxW6jwBKd433cRFW5skM0y2JJwrNW5PZNGd2mQpkXW5nqMng3hKfqvW4mf6TY2l8Z7cW85zJh193L7V-W13mWng5LwnQWW63TYmZ8gV_fSW2P7zrq653VNRW3VWcD3777z1SW56lD5x2Rqc9XW2c9yST7dkPGnN8QN5KmH5P81W2X0mgy8QsC8bW96sgBX1s8j8xW27n09c8j9l9YW5B48GV4zPyc3W745DMB39dQymW8T03mP8VZ1Z43hNs1) PODIUM RUNNER [I Am Dying to Run. In 2017, he ran a 2:39 marathon at age 46. Right now, he can't run. Faced with a heart condition that increases his chance of dying on the run, and long-haul COVID that knocks him down whenever he tries to run, he contemplates the role of running in his life, and how to keep dreaming.
