As she entered the final phase of our program- we talk about âcrossing the chasm.â Basically, the idea of how to âtake the leapâ back into activities that youâve been avoiding: Read it again. Major nugget there⦠did ya catch it? âBy simply avoiding activities that I want to do is reinforcing and encouraging the pain.â You see, most people want to rest, thinking that if they rest enough⦠their body will heal, pain will go away, and they can go back to activities they love⦠like running, lifting weights, biking, hiking, gardening, etc⦠But waiting for your pain to go away and resting (avoiding) activities- thinking this is the answer to getting back to them- is sorta like sitting inside waiting for your fear of heights to go away, thinking that eventually youâll get over your fear of heights. We all know it doesnât work that way⦠Sometimes youâve got to show up to the cliff and look over. Youâve got to make a conscious decision- at some point (more on this later) to show up and gradually get back to doing things you love and facing your fears. And by NOT doing things you love (avoiding, playing it safe & âresting up"), youâre actually fueling fear and your pain experience. Now, this is usually easier said than done⦠and thereâs a process for
#1 telling when you should take the leapâ¦
and
2# how to do it in a way that is safe and minimizes chances of re-injury or a setback. If you feel like you make progress, then re-injure yourself, make progress, re-injure yourself⦠and the cycle keeps on repeating itselfâ¦
