[Register today.]( Nonprofit News From Elsewhere Online Effective altruism, a hyper-rational approach to philanthropy dominated by young, white men, has bred “a toxic culture of sexual harassment and abuse,” according to several women connected to it. Publicly and privately, women have accused men in the movement of sexual misbehavior, including coercion and assault. They say they have faced blowback from others in the community, which a couple of the women likened to a cult, where people often work and live together, sometimes in polyamorous relationships. With effective altruism’s aspiration to mathematical precision in charity, one accuser said community members tried to calculate the probability that she was telling the truth. An employee of the Centre for Effective Altruism who for seven years has overseen “community well-being,” said she has fielded 20 such complaints and noted that the community had banned one of the accused from its “spaces.” She said without clear rules on who is a member, it’s sometimes unclear how to approach the issue, or even whether it’s an effective altruism issue or a “Bay Area problem or sex problem or something else.” ([Time]( Plus: ‘Effective Altruism’ Isn’t as Newfangled as It Seems ([Washington Post]( In addition to examining newly elected Congressman George Santos’s campaign lies and political fundraising, investigators are reportedly looking into a dubious dog-welfare charity he said that he ran. Santos allegedly made big promises to people in who run animal-rescue charities, boasted about how many animals he had helped, and fronted an organization that apparently was not registered as a nonprofit or a rescue authorized to pull dogs from New York City shelters. People who relied on him for funding say they received little to nothing after repeated attempts to collect, and at least one dog died while waiting for surgery funds that never came. In a recent interview, Santos said he “never handled the finances” of his supposed charity and implied that others bore responsibility for the failures. ([New York Times]( More News - How a Ga.
