Once a spectacle of the era of robber barons and political machines, such ostentatious demonstrations fell into disfavor as respectable charities spurned them and politicians were expected to focus more on systemic solutions and less on personal munificence. Willie Wilson’s gas giveaway — which came as he is expected to launch another run for mayor — follows Elon Musk’s pledge to remediate polluted household water supplies in Flint, Mich., and Robert Smith’s repayment of student loans for Morehouse College’s class of 2019. The media buzz generated by these kinds of eye-catching philanthropic gestures is likely to encourage more of the same. ([New York Times]( Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan will not repeat their 2020 donations to elections officials this year, while a new nonprofit-led coalition will help elections administrators across the country. In an announcement last week, the couple said their donation had been a one-time effort to shore up voting processes and security during the pandemic. Republicans have charged that Zuckerberg’s and Chan’s grants of $419 million to two nonprofits was meant to swing the election to Joe Biden, and some GOP governors and state officials have moved to blocked any more private donations for elections offices. Meanwhile, one organization that administered the 2020 donation from the Facebook billionaires, the Center for Tech and Civic Life, will lead a coalition of nonprofits, designers, and elections officials in a five-year, $80 million effort to upgrade what the center’s executive director called the country’s “crumbling” elections infrastructure. It will be funded by the TED organization’s Audacious Project, which “brings together social entrepreneurs with private donors.” ([New York Times]( and [Washington Post]( News About Major Donors - The Fortunes of MacKenzie Scott ([New York Times]( - MacKenzie Scott Just Gave $20 million to Planned Parenthood North Central States.
