Lawyers involved in the litigation, which covers allegations dating back decades, said hundreds of claimants had died during the lengthy court proceedings, which saw the nonprofit claim bankruptcy. Many âhave mental illness or extreme difficulty functioning,â one lawyer said, while still others could not bear to revisit the abuse.
