Yandel lived with dozens of other dogs in Puerto Rico. In his new home, he's the star of the show. His owner was overwhelmed. [View this email in your browser]( Dear Friend, Some pets suffer from neglect, not because their owners are cruel, but because they are overwhelmed and have no access to help. That was the case with Yandel, a gentle Lab mix who got a new "leash" on life at age 11. In his home in Puerto Rico Yandel lived in Puerto Rico, where there are an estimated 500,000 stray dogs. He was taken in by a kind elderly man. The man, Don Jose, loved his animals, but as their number grew to 40, he found himself unable to provide them with the care they needed. At an adoption event in Florida When Don Jose fell and had to be moved into long-term care, local animal rescuers provided the dogs with the safety and veterinary treatment they needed. The youngest, healthiest of the dogs found new homes in Puerto Rico, and Florida's Tri-County Animal Rescue took in the 15 oldest, including Yandel. An instant volunteer favorite At Tri-County, Yandel quickly became staff and volunteer favorite because of his charming, calm personality. However, adopters consistently passed him over because of his age and health issues: He had chronic dry eye, arthritis, and pancreatitis that affected his liver function. With his adopters and new canine sister Thanks to a Petfinder Foundation grant, "we were able to offer a waived adoption fee and all the medications and food" he needed, says volunteer Amanda Zimmer. "Once we did, his forever family finally came and adopted him!" Today, Zimmer says, "Yandel is now living the life with another dog and cat and way too many bone chews and toys!" In his new home The Petfinder Foundation helps Yandel and thousands of other senior pets find loving, forever homes.
