What would you do if a totalitarian regime seized power over your city? ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ Friend, What would you do if a totalitarian regime seized power over your city? Do you know what you would do in response? I do. I grew up in Hong Kong, a city that was once free until the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) took over. At the early age of 13, I started getting involved in Hong Kong social movements. By age 14, I faced tear gas and pepper spray while fighting for my home. Eventually, the CCP imposed a national security law that cracked down on political activism in Hong Kong. Offenders could face penalties of up to life in prison. With my record of activism and participating in protests, I knew it was only a matter of time before the CCP would arrest me. I only had two options: - Wait for the national security police to knock down my door and arrest me. - Leave my home and continue the fight abroad. Let me introduce myself. My name is Frances Hui — policy and advocacy coordinator of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation, director of We The Hongkongers, and the first Hong Kong activist to receive political asylum in America. I’m also a speaker with the Dissident Project. The Dissident Project gives speakers who have lived under current and former authoritarian regimes a platform to share their experiences with high school students across America. [I am asking for your support of The Dissident Project. We are raising $20,000 online to bring our anti-communist message to high schools. Can you donate $10, $35, $50, $100, or even $250 today?]( [Donate]( The media ignores the real threats of communism in foreign countries and even here in the United States. That’s why it’s critical for high school students to hear our first-hand stories of living in a communist regime. China is the 21st-century version of totalitarianism. They are the ultimate surveillance state with the ability to track people around the world. It’s even happening here in the United States! The CCP has been implanting many of its influences in different sectors all across America to crush democracy and freedom. They have Chinese outposts, including the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices, on Capitol Hill and American campuses. All of these things are affecting the U.S. national security and policies. They’ve even convinced corporations and international non-profits to turn a blind eye to their atrocities. The CCP’s influence is all around us, and it’s going to get worse. So, how can you and I fight back? By helping these pro-democracy activists like me share our stories. This is why the Dissident Project is so valuable. This might be the only time high school students get to hear the truth about how life in Hong Kong has radically changed since being under the thumb of a totalitarian regime.… [Will you help me reach students with my story? Your gift of $20, $35, or even $100 helps me travel to high schools across the country. Please donate by clicking here ]( [Donate $10]( [Donate $35]( [Donate $50]( [Donate $100]( [Donate $250]( [Donate $500]( [Donate $1,000]( [Donate Any Amount]( Dissident Project speakers have the power to show Americans the true value of freedom, what can happen when it’s taken away, and what you have to risk to get it back. So far, we’ve shared their stories with nearly 15,000 American students through speaking engagements and thousands more from media appearances. The Dissident Project is a not-for-profit endeavor. We don’t charge schools for access to our speakers, so their testimonies are more accessible to all. Your generous donation helps Dissident Project speakers afford to travel, set the record straight, and help students walk away with a new appreciation for the freedom we have in this country. [Help the Dissident Project speakers share our experiences with high school students across the country.
