Minnesota Governor Tim Walz did some fancy footwork over the weekend, trying to distance Vice President Kamala Harris from the pro-illegal immigration policies that he's proudly signed into law. During his interview on Fox News Sunday with Shannon Bream, Walz tried to spin his way out of some tough questions about his state's policy decisions-policies that have made Minnesota a magnet for illegal immigrants seeking benefits like driver's licenses and state-funded tuition. But when Bream pushed back, things got pretty uncomfortable. Bream got right to the point, asking if these kinds of perks encourage people to risk dangerous journeys to the U.S. and why Minnesota taxpayers should be on the hook for benefits going to people who aren't even supposed to be here. Walz's response? A classic dodge: "Well, that's not the vice president's position." Nice try, but Kamala Harris is still the face of the Biden administration's border policy. You can't pretend that the federal government's open-door approach hasn't made it easier for states like Minnesota to hand out benefits left and right. But Walz didn't stop there. He went on to tout Minnesota as a great place for business, a top spot for raising kids, and a model of health care access. That's all well and good, but it doesn't exactly answer why Minnesota is bending over backward to extend state-funded benefits to people who came here illegally. And if Minnesota is doing so great, why burden taxpayers even further with programs that benefit non-citizens? And then there's the issue of the border. Walz's attempt to praise Harris's approach as "the most strongest, the fairest we've seen" is almost laughable. It's like he's forgotten that the border crisis has reached historic levels under her watch, with record numbers of illegal crossings. But sure, go ahead and give her credit for being tough on the border-maybe someone will believe it. When Bream turned the conversation to abortion, things got even more dicey for Walz. She pointed out that Minnesota's new law-one that Walz signed himself-allows for abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy, which is far beyond what Roe v. Wade ever permitted. Walz tried to pivot, saying he and Harris want a "restoration of Roe v. Wade," but Bream wasn't letting him off the hook. "That law goes far beyond Roe v. Wade," she pressed, noting that Roe actually had a framework with limits. Minnesota's law? No limits at all. Walz's defense? He said it "puts the decision back on to the woman, to the physicians." But the fact remains, Minnesota's law is among the most extreme in the nation, and that's not the "moderate" return to Roe v. Wade that Democrats like to pretend they're fighting for. Then came the inevitable swipe at Donald Trump, with Walz calling him a liar for saying he wouldn't sign a national abortion ban. Never mind that Trump has repeatedly stated his position-Walz insists that's just not true. This, from a guy whose own "misstatements" have gotten him into hot water, including some tall tales about his military service and where he was during the Tiananmen Square massacre. But when Bream brought up those "misstatements," Walz claimed he was just speaking "passionately" and that he's always willing to own up when he's wrong.
