See what’s inspiring us during Native American Heritage month, and more. Hi there, As families

See what’s inspiring us during Native American Heritage month, and more. [View Online]( [Facebook]( [Twitter]( [Forward]( Hi there, As families around the U.S. prepare to gather around the table with their loved ones in celebration of Thanksgiving, we’d like to first acknowledge the Indigenous land we occupy - in our case, the Tongva (Gabrieliño) land on which our Culver City HQ is built. This season has also got us thinking about all the things we’re grateful for: The opportunity to tell important stories that uncover the past, shine a light on the truth, and help forge the path to a better future. We’re grateful to have three of our films - DESCENDANT ([now streaming on Netflix]( LOWNDES COUNTY AND THE ROAD TO BLACK POWER ([coming soon]( and ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED ( [in theaters today]( – recognized by the Critics’ Choice Awards, so that more people will have the chance to learn and be inspired by these stories. Also now available to [stream on Netflix]( COSTA BRAVA, LEBANON, by newcomer director Mounia Akl. Read on to learn about our new web series with Stephen Satterfield, and discover the Native American art+activism inspiring us this month. In gratitude, – Your fellow Participants [Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power - IMAGE]( They Called It 'Bloody Lowndes' LOWNDES COUNTY AND THE ROAD TO BLACK POWER comes out December 2 Just outside Montgomery, Alabama, lies the rural and impoverished Lowndes County. Known in the 1960s as “Bloody Lowndes” for its rampant racist terrorism, the majority-Black county had zero Black registered voters. Our new film, LOWNDES COUNTY AND THE ROAD TO BLACK POWER, tells the story of the local movement and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) leaders who fought not just for voting rights, but for Black Power. With the Georgia runoff election set to take place in a few days, this story could not be more timely. Today, as much as ever, voting rights represent one of our core rights as citizens– a right we must continue to defend and exercise. Catch LOWNDES COUNTY in theaters and streaming on Amazon and Apple TV December 2. [READ MORE]( [ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED- IMAGE]( Keeping Institutions In Check ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED hits theaters TODAY We’re thrilled to share that Laura Poitras’ acclaimed documentary, ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED, opens in [select theaters today]( The film follows internationally renowned photographer and activist Nan Goldin’s life and personal fight to hold the Sackler family accountable for their role in the opioid overdose crisis. The Sacklers, owners of Purdue Pharma and creators of OxyContin, over the years tried to cleanse their reputation by making substantial philanthropic donations to museums and prestigious universities around the world. Museums, cultural institutions, and corporations have a responsibility towards the world they inhabit. In this case, not only did Purdue Pharma and the museums that took their money fail their responsibilities, they also did massive harm in doing so. [A recent study]( “Can Old Sin Make New Shame? Stock Market Reactions to the Release of Movies Re-Exposing Past Corporate Scandals” takes a deep look at our 2019 film, DARK WATERS, about DuPont’s environmental misconduct in contaminating water supplies with toxic chemicals. Having successfully removed the Sackler’s name from various museums, Nan Goldin’s organization, [P.A.I.N.]( (Prescription Addiction Intervention Now) is now focused on destigmatizing drug use and promoting harm reduction models of drug treatment and policy. [SUPPORT P.A.I.N.]( [Descendant Cookout - IMAGE]( Where There's Food, There's Conversation New Web Series Launch: Descendant Cookout If you’ve [seen our new film]( DESCENDANT, you’re familiar with the story of Africatown, Alabama: A once thriving community established after Emancipation by the last known Africans to arrive in the U.S. in an illegal slave ship. Today, this community faces a myriad of environmental and economic injustices. Our friend Stephen Satterfield, creator of Whetstone Magazine and host of the Netflix docuseries High On The Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America, traveled to Africatown to meet, cook, and eat with these descendants. Our upcoming 3-part web series explores the way food can keep traditions alive and bring people to the table to spark conversation. [Don't miss the episodes]( premiering weekly on YouTube starting November 28, and check out the [Whetstone newsletter]( for more food + culture. We hope this fuels curiosity about [your own family history]( and heritage during this season of family gatherings, and inspires you to get involved with the Africatown community.
