Our impact went straight to the White House! Plus, see how Hollywood stood #WithRefugees at the Oscars. [View Online]( [Facebook]( [Twitter]( [Forward]( Hi there, With so much to discuss about this year's Oscars® we, as always, are focused on the union of art and impact. Hollywood's biggest night, once again, served as a chance to reaffirm the power of film to make a true difference in the world, and to celebrate the creators driving that change. There are so many moments to highlight from this year's ceremony — here are a few of the many trailblazers we're thrilled to congratulate: - Upon winning Best Supporting Actress for WEST SIDE STORY, Ariana DeBose became the [first openly queer woman of color]( and first Afro-Latina, to win an Oscar in an acting category. - Best Supporting Actor Troy Katsur became the [first Deaf man to win an acting Oscar]( for his performance in CODA (an acronym for “children of deaf adults”), which also earned Academy Awards® for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay on a [historic night for the Deaf community](. - Jane Campion (THE POWER OF THE DOG) became just the [third woman to win the Oscar for Best Director]( following Chloé Zhao, who won the award last year for NOMADLAND. Read on to learn about the films and artists who are standing #WithRefugees from around the world, and how one Participant film’s impact just went all the way to the White House. – Your fellow Participants [Oscars Blue Ribbon Collage]( On Its Biggest Stage, Hollywood Stands #WithRefugees Our film FLEE made Oscar history as the first movie to earn nominations for Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature, and Best International Film. And while it didn’t take home any hardware, the movie joined fellow nominees ENCANTO, DUNE, BELFAST, and THREE SONGS FOR BENAZIR in [shedding light on forced displacement]( around the world. We are proud to partner with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, which created the blue [#WithRefugees ribbons worn by talent on the red carpet](. Groundbreaking films like FLEE humanize the refugee experience and inspire the world to support all refugees, from Ukraine, to Afghanistan, to Syria and beyond. Films like FLEE, and so many of Participant’s documentaries, including past Oscar winners such as AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH and CITIZENFOUR, would not have been possible without the brilliant and beloved [Diane Weyermann]( who passed away in October 2021 and was honored during the ceremony’s [In Memoriam](. Learn how to [support refugees]( and keep scrolling to see an incredible conversation with the creators of FLEE. [GET INVOLVED]( [Headlines + Highlights] [Lorna Breen Signing]( We did it! Dr. Lorna Breen Act Becomes Law The big news: [President Biden signed into law]( on March 18 the [Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act]( a first-of-its-kind legislation that aims to reduce the stigma of seeking mental health support among health care professionals. Why it matters: The bill is named after [Dr. Lorna Breen,]( a New York City ER physician who treated COVID-19 patients, contracted the virus herself, and returned to work immediately upon her recovery. Though exhausted and overwhelmed, she was afraid to seek mental health support for fear of losing her license. Dr. Breen died by suicide in April 2020. This law is a major step forward for healthcare workers who deserve access to the care that they give us everyday. Our collective impact: We’re proud to have partnered with the [Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes Foundation]( led by Corey Feist and Jennifer Breen Feist (Lorna’s brother-in-law and sister), through THE FIRST WAVE, Matthew Heineman’s [riveting documentary]( about [frontline healthcare workers]( in the early pandemic. Inspired by the film, thousands of Participants like YOU advocated to lawmakers and were instrumental to the bill’s passage. [Meet a Participant — Corey Feist — Image]( What you can do next: Did you know many state medical boards in our country ask discriminatory questions about mental health that violate the American Disabilities Act? Join us in [emailing your State Medical Board TODAY]( to eliminate these discriminatory questions and encourage healthcare workers to seek help when needed. [ADVOCATE NOW]( [Redefining Refugee — Image]( Redefining Documentary, Redefining “Refugee” “Being a refugee is just a circumstance, it’s not an identity,” says FLEE director Jonas Poher Rasmussen. In [this powerful conversation]( Rasumussen talks to actress-activist Azita Ghanizada, along with FLEE [Executive Producer Riz Ahmed]( whose film THE LONG GOODBYE just earned the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. Check out the conversation, and find other ways to make an impact. Here’s how: - Get to know Afghans [through their art]( and their [cherished objects from home.]( - Stream FLEE [on Hulu](. - Support refugee families by [donating to Miry’s List]( via the fundraiser in bio. Participant and Neon each will be matching donations benefiting Miry's List up to $5,000. [HELP REFUGEES]( [Headlines + Highlights] [Ketanji Brown Jackson — Image]( Lightning Round! Fast Art & Impact From March - As Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson continues her historic Supreme Court confirmation hearing, [check out]( some of our [favorite portraits]( of the [trailblazing nominee]( on [Instagram](. - As Women’s History Month winds down, a reminder that women artists’ impact never ends. Take it from a Native artist [renewing sacred tattoos]( a New York-based artist [celebrating influential Black women]( and an [Afghan artist]( revealing beauty during dark times. - As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine wages on, artists are standing up and speaking out with [protest hip-hop]( [resistance radio]( and [powerful illustrations](.
