Actually, don't). All the hurricanes in the news lately are making me want to make sure YOU have an evacuation plan with your pets! Here are 4 important things to do now, before it's an emergency: - Prep your pet go-bag. Pack enough food for 2 weeks, enough meds for 2 weeks (is it time for a refill?), food and water bowls, their leash or carrier, and a disposable litterbox (baking pans work well). You can also stash a piece of dirty laundry in their travel carrier to give them a familiar scent. Got a cat or dog who gets nervous or stressed during travel? Ask your vet to prescribe the appropriate dose of gabapentin or another calming medication. Plan to dose your pet at least 2 hours before you head out. Have this go-bag ready at all times. Check every 6 months or so to ensure meds aren't expired! - Make sure your pets have ID. Has it been a while since you updated your pet's microchip info? Call your vet and get the chip number. Then update your address and phone info on this website: www.freepetchipregistry.com. Remember, microchips are NOT GPS tags, so up-to-date contact info is the best way to find a lost pet. (Bonus points if you outfit your pet in a collar or tag with your phone number — but collars get lost, so the microchip is still key.) - Find pet-friendly hotels in advance. Look up 1-2 hotels in each cardinal direction, so no matter which way you evacuate, you'll have somewhere safe to land... and you won't have to smuggle in your pets or get turned away at the door. - Practice, practice, practice. Take short car rides to get your pets used to leaving at a moment's notice, and reward them with treats afterward. Get cats used to walking on a harness and leash (it sounds crazy, but a harness with detachable leash inside a carrier is the safest way to keep your cat from bolting, especially if you need to unload them in an airport or another busy space). Rehearse loading everyone up. If and when you actually need to evacuate, they'll know the routine. They might still be stressed, but YOU'LL be a little less stressed. 💙 And not that I have to say this to you — but in an emergency, don't leave your pets behind. If it's not safe for you, it's not safe for them. Happy planning! Lianna [shop human-grade pet supplements](   [space ghost and banks] Space Ghost (16.5) and Banks (8) hate evacuating, but eventually they forgive me for disrupting their synchronized sleeping routine.   This is where I tell you you're doing a great job and your pets love you!
