New podcast with Chris Voss! October 04, 2024 [WEBSITE]( | [UNSUBSCRIBE]( 5 brilliant and simple tactics for getting everything you want in life. “The Best Deal I Ever Made” JAMES ALTUCHER Dear Reader, I just had an incredible conversation with Chris Voss about negotiation tactics and his new documentary, "Tactical Empathy." Chris is the real deal - former FBI hostage negotiator and author of "Never Split the Difference," which I've referenced countless times since our first podcast in 2016. He helps anyone make the best win-win deals of their lives with simple methods. The genius part: they apply no matter if you’re handling a hostage scenario, a high-stakes business deal, or cranky kids. Today, I wanted to share a few actionable insights with you from this conversation. (And a link below to listen to the whole thing - Chris changed my life and I bet he can change yours, too.) First, though, I have something BIG coming up this Sunday. And it has everything to do with what’s happening on October 10th… When Elon Musk will take the stage at Tesla’s investor event in Burbank, CA. What he reveals could be the biggest step forward for our country since the invention of the internet. I don’t say that lightly. Musk himself recently tweeted, “This will be one for the history books.” In short, what Musk talks about could be one of the most transformational moments in AI… And our team is going to talk all about it. Why I Love Chris Voss One of the most fascinating things Chris shared was about the neuroscience behind negotiation. When you demonstrate understanding to someone, it triggers a release of oxytocin and serotonin in their brain. Oxytocin bonds them to you and makes them more honest, while serotonin is a satisfaction drug that makes them less demanding. Think of it as waving a neurological wand. Chris also emphasized the power of listening without arguing. Most people aren't used to being truly heard, so when you actually listen and feed back what they're saying, it catches them off guard in a positive way. This technique works in EVERY situation and is extremely powerful. Chris also shared a brilliant tactic for business negotiations. He'll say, "I'll sign the deal as is right now, but here's where it fell short." This approach often leads to the other side improving the deal because they don't want you to resent it later. Resentment, as Chris pointed out, is expensive in long-term relationships. Another fascinating point Chris made was about pronoun usage. If someone uses a lot of "we" and plural pronouns, they're likely influential in their organization. If they stick to singular pronouns, they're probably less important and trying to compensate. A striking fact from his new documentary: anger not only lowers your IQ but also gives you more energy. As Chris put it, "You're dumber and you have more energy." That's a dangerous combination in any negotiation. Moreover, Chris emphasized the importance of authenticity and long-term thinking in negotiations. He aims for 20-year relationships where both parties look back and say, "This was the best deal I ever made." This is just scratching the surface. This conversation was packed with actionable insights on negotiation. Whether you're dealing with a hostage situation or a salary negotiation, Chris's tactics can help.
