That’s more than economists expected. And it’s the highest level since August 2023. Unemployment is also rising. Nearly 1.87 million Americans are getting benefits. We haven’t seen levels this high since November 2021. That was during the COVID pandemic. So signs are hinting that the economy is starting to cool. And combined with slightly lower inflation in the latest Consumer Price Index report, it seems a near certainty that the Fed will start easing interest rates soon. In fact, the market is pricing in a nearly 100% chance the Fed will cut rates at its September meeting.
