Rare Big Tusker Elephant Killed by Trophy Hunter in Zimbabwe — Tell Authorities to Create Stricter Laws! Prior to this, the public became more aware of trophy hunting after the tragic story of Cecil the lion who was shot by a hunter despite being collared and studied by scientists. And tragically, yet another collared animal, an extremely rare “Big-Tusker” elephant, has been shot and killed by a trophy hunter in Zimbabwe. A petition on Care2 states that there are now only 29 of these “Big-Tuskers” left in the world after this tragic loss. The fact that the animal was collared and being studied adds to the controversy, but as the petition’s author explains, Zimbabwe currently does not have any laws protecting collared animals. Perth-based live export company, Emanuel Exports has once again allowed a huge number of animals to die while being shipped. Around 64,000 sheep were being shipped to the Middle East, but just under 62,000 made it there alive – which makes the company responsible for the deaths of some 2,400 animals. After footage from a sheep export was broadcast on Channel Nine’s program 60 Minutes, a wave of protests and outrage followed. The video showed sheep crowded into a small space, pens covered in feces where animals stood panting or collapsed, and workers throwing dead animals overboard. The dog was desperately trying to keep up, while the other was running alongside unbound. The man was also seen throwing one of the dogs on the floor when the animal would not get out of the car, as well as kneeing the other dog. Despite the alarming reports, investigators claimed that the dogs had not been injured and did not see the events as abuse. [Read more here.]( Let’s Shut Down Cruel (and Illegal) Safari Park Where Chained Monkeys Are Forced to Perform Tricks At Phuket Safari Eco+ Park, the macaques are led, with metal chains around their necks, into a specially prepared pavilion when the tourists arrive to see them, a Care2 petition reports. The music starts, the trainers yank at the chains, and the monkeys begin the show. The spectacle is perhaps designed to look like the animals are having the time of their lives, but the reality of those shows and the monkeys’ lives in captivity is simply heartbreaking. Technically speaking, parks like this are illegal in the light of the animal welfare law passed by the Thai government in 2014. Unfortunately, this law is rarely enforced. It is high time for the country’s government to step in and shut down facilities which clearly do not work in accordance with Thailand’s law. Tell TripAdvisor to Stop Promoting Captive Breeding Sloth ‘Scamtuary’ in Oregon! The Sloth Captive Husbandry Center in Rainier, Oregon is home to the world’s largest population of captive adult sloths. The facility claims to be a sanctuary and, as such, plays an “important” and “needed” role for the species – but the facts point to something very different. Unfortunately, despite their shortcomings in terms of animal welfare, the center continues to be promoted by TripAdvisor, whose animal welfare policy keeps on failing the very animals it should be protecting. The owners of the center have a history of illegally selling sloths and other exotic animals to the black market via illegal websites. Most of the animals they resell will be used in such facilities as roadside attractions or zoos. The USDA has already cited the owners for inhumane animal conditions that could harm the animals.
