In 2017, Dr. Dimie Ogoina, an infectious disease specialist at the Niger Delta University in Nigeria, saw an 11-year-old boy who had a puzzling rash. It turned out to be monkeypox -- and was a harbinger of more cases to come. Ogoina tried to warn the world that monkeypox was being transmitted in new ways. No one listened.
