[Jalapa Girl Jewelsmiths]( Spreading happiness has always been central to Novica’s mission, which is why we undertake happiness projects in the regions where our artisans live and work. One truly touching project took place in a remote corner of Guatemala, where Novica’s Central America team took the lead on building a new library for an inspiring group of young women, the Jalapa Girl Jewelsmiths. Deep in the mountains of Guatemala sits El Hogar Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios, an orphanage that houses 110 girls between the ages of two and 21, who have been referred by the courts for domestic violence, physical and psychological abuse, incest, rape or neglect. Under the tutelage of benevolent nuns — and Chicago artist Clare Kunkel, who began working with the girls in 2007— many of the young graduates of the orphanage become jewelry artisans in their own right, channeling their creativity into beautiful works of art. This particular happiness project was a true labor of love… and required serious physical effort. After clearing a storeroom to make space for the new library, Novica team members picked up the tools at hand and began the intensive process of building. Milena wielded a drill, whose bit smoked as it bored holes into the cement for the bookshelves. Tita, Alejandra and other members of the team focused on every small detail to create a warm and inviting place in which to read and learn. As the storage space underwent its radical transformation into a beautiful library full of books, everyone felt emotional. But the most incredible part of the experience was witnessing the faces of the girls as they explored the shelves for the first time, excited to begin their own journey into the wonderful world of literature.
