Why trying to be profitable from small tick trades is dead wrong!

[Ninjacators icon]   Hey Trader, Trading for small tick profits is wrong! Dead wrong. I know I'm trampling on "sacred ground" here, but I think you will agree with me when you hear why I say this. (Incidentally, I’m still a fan of TAKING small tick profits -- but only as the LAST RESORT of saving a trade.) Here's the scoop: Conventional wisdom says you can get rich by only going for small tick profits on every trade. But like so much conventional wisdom, it’s wrong. Based on truth? Yes. Still wrong? Also yes. It’s wrong because it’s short-sighted. Anyone can scoop a couple of ticks’ profits from a trade. But in order to become profitable over the long run, no amount of tiny profit trades can cover the inevitable losses you’ll have. This is why: You only want to go for trades where you KNOW you have at least a 3:1 to 10:1 risk-reward ratio. Every day you see how trying to make serious money from tiny tick profits is fool’s gold: ... You remember times you’ve seen a tiny tick trade and thought, “Wow, if I could grab that on every trade -- I’d be rich! (But the market reverses, your tiny profit trade gets stopped out and you have nothing to show for your efforts). ... And you know of times when you saw a large profit opportunity and instantly thought, “I’m in!” (And even though you didn’t make as much as you wanted -- you still made a LOT more than if you were only hunting tiny tick trades.) It’s trying to repeat those almost magical "I'm in!" large profit trades - when you just automatically pull the trigger and profit - that drives most traders batty (and many broke). See what I mean? Again, nothing personal against tiny tick profits. But someone's gotta stand up and tell it like it is. I started my trading career on the CME trading floor (the one where there’s actually a bunch of folks standing in a room and screaming at each other:-).
