Register for NHEM events [View as Webpage]( [National Education Association]( [NEA Higher Ed]( {NAME}, My name is Alec Thomson and I am the president of NEA’s National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). As National Higher Education Month (October) approaches, I write to say THANK YOU. Our work as faculty and staff often isn’t easy, but it is always essential—to students, to communities, and to democracy. I also write with a couple of requests. First, consider our collective strength. As higher educators and as union members, we are shouldering open doors that some people in power are trying their hardest to keep closed. I know this effort can be exhausting. But when we fight, we win. And we are winning! Second, become involved in our National Higher Education Month activities. On the evening of October 1st, there is a NEA-hosted webinar led by the Office of General Counsel discussing faculty and staff’s rights on campuses. On October 22nd, another webinar highlights the new release of the 2024 Directory of Bargaining Agents and Contracts in Institutions of Higher Education. This is a fantastic resource that union members across the country should access. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
