Learn to Listen Well to Your Child I had the good fortune and fun of joining in some school field trips recently, and amidst the bus chatter, I asked some children what they wished parents would do more of. Guess what they said? "Listen." Isnât that interesting? I'm often asked by parents, "How do I get my child to listen?" and yet, one of the greatest things we can do as a parent or teacher is learn to listen well to them. That means listening with empathy. Listening without judgment. Listening without feedback. And perhaps the hardest of all, listening without fixing. From toddlers whose challenging behavior is just another way of communicating to preteens whose defiance is a callout for connection, children want to be heard, and often, they just want us to listen. So, weâre turning this weekâs newsletter on its head and facing it towards us grown-ups. Listening to our children well can make all the difference, especially during this time of year when:
- Things fatigue at school (as they move into those last units of academic learning);
- Friend groups feel tricky (itâs common for children to want to explore new friendships right about now, but they may be unsure of how to let go of old friendships); or
- The ground beneath feels uncertain (as talk of next yearâs classes encircles). Let your child talk and offer any of these phrases:
"Tell me more."
"That sounds hard."
"Iâm here." No judging. No fixing. Even if you think you have the best advice in the world. And when theyâre done talking, ask this one question: "Would you like me to just listen, or would you like some ideas to solve your problem?" This simple prompt will give your child a sense of control over their choices and show them that you want to understand their realities. Our innate desire to offer solutions may come from a wonderfully well-meaning place, but may also disempower our children from building their resilience to deal with a problem. When we increase our listening, we signal to our children: "This is hard, and I believe you can find your way through this." Keep reading below for specific topics where increasing your listening can uncover deeper insights into your childâs behavior and empower your child with problem-solving skills and coping strategies.
