Here’s [our curated summer reading list of children’s books (from preschool to ages 8+)]( and two pieces of advice on reading and children worth remembering: - "As children mature, especially middle schoolers, the amount of time spent on leisurely reading plummets. Reading is mind-expanding, and summer is a fabulous time to make space for it." - Ms. Webb - "If you’re wondering, 'How do I encourage my child to read more?' or worried that 'My child doesn’t read enough,' let them immerse themselves in whatever topic floats their boat. Children are naturally curious. The reading will come when it’s about something they care about. Other than that, go outside - play!" - Mr. Cairns If you’re looking to add to your own grown-up reading list, below are some personal winners that have helped shaped how I see the world as a parent (they’re not parenting books!). What books have left an imprint on your perspective? [Let us know](mailto:hello@myplinkit.com) - we love hearing from you. Warmly, Founder of Plinkit [The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time]( One that was more dark, original and enlightening than I expected. It reminded me of reading in my childhood because I couldn’t put it down and found myself reading voraciously. It’s written from the point of a view of a child who physically and emotionally sees the world in a different and revealing way. It’s so innocent and direct. [The Overstory]( One that changed my relationship with nature - and how I talk about it with my children. The most compelling thing I’ve read on how we move through this planet, how we look at trees, how our lives are woven together. If you’re planning on being outdoors this summer, this one will make you look up differently. My kids and I listen for tree whispers all the time now. (Yes, it's a slog to finish, but worth it.) [Shuggie Bain]( One that made me hug my children even tighter. I emotionally struggled to finish this book, but it changed me. This book is so artfully written that you inextricably become part of the characters’ lives and end up rooting for them in ways you didn’t expect. It’s so deeply human and open. But, grim, gritty and gut-wrenching. (Not for the faint hearted.) [The Anxious Generation]( One that I bought in hardcover because I liked the bullet points, charts and callouts. If you’ve been following Plinkit and reading our articles and newsletters, this one probably doesn’t come as a surprise. As one reader said to us, "It’s very Plinkit." Pointed and practical, it constructively offers structure and solutions to a topic that we think is no longer up for debate.
