Shooting Illustrated
We no longer use manual typewriters. Brakes on new vehicles are now powered. Television sets don’t have tubes and a million other devices in common use at the time of our birth are forgotten. This is true in the world of firearms, just as it is in communications, merchandising and every other aspect of our lives. It is called progress, and it will never be stopped. If you narrow it down to just repeating handguns, you can quickly see the truth of this premise. [READ MORE]( [Austria-Hungary's M95 rifle](
GUNS Magazine
In 1886, the armies of Austria-Hungary’s Hapsburg Empire were arming up with, what I would argue, was the most advanced repeating rifle the world had ever seen. Slim and well balanced, its straight-pull bolt action and en-bloc clip-loaded five-shot magazine made it the best handling, fastest loading and fastest shooting military rifle extant, firing the powerful 11x58mmR (rimmed) black powder cartridge. Field & Stream
If “Shotgun Questions” was ever a “Family Feud” topic, “Should I buy a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500?” would be the top answer. It’s a question shotgunners have asked since the debut of the 500, almost a dozen years after the first 870 was made. Both are triumphs of post-WWII mass production and both have been made by the million. But, the question is, which one is better? [READ MORE]( SPONSORED CONTENT

American Handgunner
It was a Tuesday night in December 1954. I specifically remember the day as every Tuesday I took the bus to town to pay my paper bill. My paper route had 100 customers, and on Friday night I collected $0.45 from each. The following Tuesday the Beacon Journal got $30, and I had $15 for myself. This particular night I spent a dollar of that $15. It cost me $0.50 to ride the bus both ways, and it was my habit as I walked back to the bus stop to check the newsstand. There on the magazine rack at the newsstand was the January 1955 issue of a new magazine called GUNS. I could hardly get the second $0.50 out of my pocket fast enough. Finally, a magazine totally devoted to firearms. Fast-forward 21 years. I was still reading GUNS every month. [READ MORE]( PRODUCT SHOWCASE [Burris Thermal: Simple. Fast. Powerful.](

American Rifleman
Muzzleloaders have come a long way since their renaissance in the 1950s and ‘60s. Contemporary muzzleloaders are anything but primitive, with their high-tech materials, state-of-the-art designs and modern bullets and propellants. While modern muzzleloaders are easy to shoot, it’s hard to beat the satisfaction of loading and firing a traditional muzzleloader. Brass and blued steel. Hardwood stocks. A large cloud of pungent smoke. Nothing harkens back to the beginnings of the American experience like an old-school muzzleloader. [READ MORE]( SPONSORED CONTENT

In 2014, Mossberg invited me on a safari in South Africa, and to be the first to test a new bolt-action rifle. I’m always eager to assess a new hunting rifle; I enjoy it almost as much as being on safari. What I couldn’t have known at the time was that this new rifle—in one version or another—would end up accompanying me on many more hunts across the world over the next 6 years. [To Restore, or Not to Restore?](
Turnbull Restoration Co. Inc.
That’s the foundational question that collectors and heirloom owners should ask when considering what could become a journey to revitalize, or perhaps even resurrect, a classic firearm. Turnbull Restoration Co. has helped its customers understand all the ins and outs of firearm restoration for over 30 years. In fact, it may surprise many how much restoration work the company actually declines. It’s because Turnbull knew from the beginning that helping with decision-making that’s right for the customer is what would be right for the company. Firearms News
The recent discovery that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has begun mass denial of Form 1 applications for prospective makers of suppressors is a huge shift in policy that has some pro-Second Amendment organizations concerned. On the last day of February, ATF denied nearly 850 Form 1 applications (their technical name is ATF Form 5320.1) That’s the form required for applicants who are not licensed to manufacture NFA-regulated firearms to legally create an NFA firearm, and suppressors have the same requirement. WWI & II Infantry Rifle with SLING, BAYONET, & SHEATH Here we present a C&R Austrian Steyr Model 95 Straight Pull Bolt Action Mannlicher Rifle, made circa the turn of the century in Austria. It chambered the 8×50mmR Mannlicher cartridge. In the 1880s, the bolt-action rifle was a very innovative firearm. One of the leaders in the design of these guns was a man named Ferdinand Ritter von Mannlicher. Mannlicher invented a straight pull, bolt action rifle that fed from an internal box magazine. In 1885, Mannlicher combined his efforts with the Austrian Arms Factory company at Steyr and formed the Steyr Mannlicher group to produce a new rifle that fired black powder 8x50R cartridges, the Model 1888. The gun was a success with the Austrian Army, but in 1893 smokeless powder caught on and replaced black powder practically overnight. Thus, the Austrians needed another new gun, and that is when Mannlicher came out with the Model 95. Based on his previous M1890 design, this rifle was manufactured in the Austro-Hungarian Empire at state arms factories in Steyr (Austria) and Budapest (Hungary). More than 3 million of M95 rifles were produced between 1895 and 1918. This rifle was issued to the Austro-Hungarian army, and, after the fall of the Empire, to the Austrian and Hungarian armies.
