Her most recent win could finally break it. by Joyce Vance Much has been written about Britney Spears' legal fight, but despite worldwide attention, she remains in her conservatorship. And a key provision making it difficult for Spears to choose her own counsel hasn't helped. "In some ways, a defendant in a criminal case enjoys more protection of their rights than Spears has had," writes Joyce Vance. "Spears turned [cartwheels on social media]( the day the judge ruled in her favor, permitting her to choose her own lawyer. This decision doesn’t guarantee she’ll be able to win her freedom, but she’ll have a fairer shot," Vance notes. Everyone, including pop stars, deserves representation free from corruption and conflicts of interest. Hopefully this is a step forward for Spears and others stuck in a system they do not know how to escape.
