[View in browser]( [Image]( July 24, 2021 THE LATEST [Alternate text] Britney Spears is caught in a vicious cycle. Her most recent win could finally break it. by Joyce Vance Much has been written about Britney Spears' legal fight, but despite worldwide attention, she remains in her conservatorship. And a key provision making it difficult for Spears to choose her own counsel hasn't helped. "In some ways, a defendant in a criminal case enjoys more protection of their rights than Spears has had," writes Joyce Vance. "Spears turned [cartwheels on social media]( the day the judge ruled in her favor, permitting her to choose her own lawyer. This decision doesn’t guarantee she’ll be able to win her freedom, but she’ll have a fairer shot," Vance notes. Everyone, including pop stars, deserves representation free from corruption and conflicts of interest. Hopefully this is a step forward for Spears and others stuck in a system they do not know how to escape.
