Though six of the people killed were Asian women, the alleged assailant said that it wasn't about race. That was good enough for police, but "it’s unwise to draw the quick and easy conclusions these officials have apparently made," Kevin M. Kruse writes. "Consider the killing of Chinese American man Vincent Chin, nearly four decades ago," Kruse writes. Chin was brutally killed in Detroit by two white men who had allegedly shouted racial slurs at him during a fight earlier in the night. But once on trial, they swore that race had no part — and the authorities believed them.
