It was quite the contrast from earlier in the week when Judge Tanya Chutkan [reminded the former president]( who’s running the criminal proceedings against him on election interference charges. Outside of the courts, the presidential contender had an interesting week as well. Not only did he [make a creepy, gaslighting remark]( about being women’s “protector,” but now Trump is [peddling watches]( with a price tag that’s more than the average American’s annual income. He also [floated an idea]( for cryptocurrency that’s so improbable even his supporters couldn’t stifle their laughter. The former president’s constant refrain about being the victim of a legal double standard also [took a blow this week](, as federal prosecutors brought charges against another prominent Democrat. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has spent much of his tenure in office fear-mongering about crime in the city — and now it turns out there’s a chance he [may have been projecting](. Adams was indicted on federal charges for bribery and wire fraud; he pleaded not guilty on Friday. While the mayor’s political career appears to be effectively over, the [Trumpian rhetoric he’s adopted]( as he plays defense is just getting started. Elsewhere, Congress [managed to avert a government shutdown](, and Democrats are largely to thank. Speaker Mike Johnson [had some rather unsettling things to say]( about certification of the 2024 election. And to make matters more alarming, the power grab by Georgia’s pro-Trump election board [appears to be worse than initially reported](.
