We uncovered that popular car brands — like BMW, Toyota, Tesla and Volkswagen — are collecting your deeply personal data. They may even sell this information to a murky third-party for profit. But the terrifying answer to our most asked question is: yes, for most readers in the United States, it can be perfectly legal for car companies to collect personal information on your sex life, genetic information and where you drive… for now. That’s why Mozilla plans to launch a new campaign, called “Privacy for All,” to push for a strong, comprehensive federal privacy law in the U.S. We believe companies should not be given free reign to collect, share and sell our personal data. But before we launch, we wanted to ask our Mozilla community a few simple questions so we can better understand what’s important to you and where you’d like to see improved privacy options in your life.
