Privacy and AI are inextricably linked. The AI arms race has incentivized companies to scrape and amass as much data as possible, with little regard for peoples’ privacy. For us to have trustworthy AI, we must think about data privacy. Privacy for All is a global movement to secure data privacy as a right for everyone, regardless of where they live. This means establishing data privacy laws where they do not exist, and where they do exist, making sure they remain strong, protected and enforced. Weak or nonexistent privacy laws in one part of the world can make everyone vulnerable. In 2022 alone there were over 1,800 data breaches in the U.S. affecting 400 million people worldwide. A lack of privacy protections in large and influential markets – like the United States – puts us all at risk. That's why our first step in our Privacy for All campaign is to call for a comprehensive data privacy law in the U.S. [Will you add your name to say you want a federal data privacy law in the United States?]( [Add Your Name →]( Without a concerted effort from our global community, we can expect large, multinational companies to set the regulatory agenda – either by supporting weak privacy laws, negotiating down their obligations, or pushing limited enforcement of AI regulations. The unfortunate reality is our online footprint can reveal a lot about us – everything from our live location to dating preferences. As AI becomes more powerful and effective at gleaning detailed insights about our lives, we urgently need privacy protections that prevent companies from ruthlessly exploiting our information for profit. By focusing on filling in the gaps in global data protection laws, we’ll also give AI regulation a better chance of success. Take the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act. This landmark legislation is better situated to stop harmful AI because the EU has an existing, mature data privacy regime in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). [Will you add your name to say you support a federal data privacy law in the United States and be a part of Mozilla's Privacy for All campaign?]( [Add Your Name to Support U.S. Data Privacy →]( While our immediate focus will be to pass a federal privacy law in the United States, Privacy for All also will work to strengthen the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and build out a data protection strategy across the African continent. As AI adoption expands and raises the stakes on privacy, we're glad to work with you and the Mozilla community until we truly have privacy for all. Thanks for all you do for the internet.
