The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( October 30, 2023 Greetings, Mother Jones readers. It's Julianne McShane, the new [news & engagement writer]( around here, where I'll be focusing on this newsletter, daily news coverage, and occasional deeper dives on issues around gender and inequity. I've been an avid and admiring reader of this magazine and its website for quite some time, and I'm very excited to join this newsroom's talented staff and make myself at home in your inboxes. My inner child is also pumped: My first "byline" arrived in a childhood email newsletter I forced my family members to "subscribe" to. So you could say this is a return to my journalistic roots. (I was a normal child, I swear.) I'd love for you to help me get acquainted here: What do you like (or dislike) about the newsletter? What would you like to see more (or less) of? [Drop a line here](. Now let's jump into the top news of the hour, specifically the war between Israel and Hamas, [which]( my colleagues have been [covering]( [diligently](. The crisis has spilled over to college campuses in the United States, with authorities [investigating]( anonymous, since-deleted threats made on a Greek life message board against Jewish students at Cornell University. The threats prompted New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to visit the campus today, where she and university officials condemned antisemitism, Cornell's student newspaper [reported](. The Biden administration is also unveiling a plan today to combat antisemitism on college campuses after what officials said has been an uptick in incidents since the war broke out in early October, [according to NBC News](. Meanwhile, in Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis [banned]( a pro-Palestinian student organization on campuses statewideâa decision he [defended]( on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday, claiming that it wasn't a "free speech issue." Palestine Legal [refuted]( DeSantis' assertion and argued that First Amendment rights were being violated. The incidents echo an in-depth piece [published]( today in The Cut that mentions several law students at top-tier schools who have had employment offers revoked after they signed statements that blamed Israel for the attacks carried out by Hamas. All of this raises questions about how universities can keep both Palestinian and Jewish students safe on college campuses while protecting students' rights to free speech and peaceful protest. Stay tuned for a forthcoming piece from my colleague [Jeremy Schulman]( on those very issues.
