The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( September 21, 2023 Hello! This is Henry, the editorial fellow you may have come across on [Threads]( and [Twitter]( (ok, fine X) asking about your water bills. Well, there was a good reason. My investigation, [which published this morning](, explores how systemic disinvestment and racist policies lay the groundwork for predominantly Black communities to pay astronomically more for basic infrastructure and utilities such as water. I won't spoil the story for you but I can promise by the end you will read about an FBI raid, multi-thousand-dollar water bills, and (you didn't guess it) Gucci bags. Racist policies, as journalist Audrey Gray reports, are among the primary factors killing vulnerable people in our extreme climates. Like the city I investigatedâPrichard, Alabamaâthe historically Black church in South Phoenix that Gray focuses on in her feature feels abandoned by the government. One exchange has specifically stuck with me: âIs the government any help at Wesley?â Gray asked Sylvia Harris, the pastor at Wesley. Without hesitation, Harris responded: âNo! Itâs not! Itâs not there.â These stories happen to coincide with [Climate Week](, the annual climate change protest in New York City. It also comes on the heels of the Biden administration's launch of the [American Climate Corps](, which aims to train at least 20,000 young Americans in clean energy and climate resiliency jobs. That might bring some hope. But organizers of Sunday's March to End Fossil Fuels, the [largest climate protest]( since the start of the pandemic, wonder if Biden could do more. "A Climate Corps that focuses solely on promoting renewables doesn't do the job," says organizer [Keanu Arpels-Josiah](, "It wonât end new fossil fuel projects and phase out existing projects in the timeline we need for our generation to survive." âHenry Carnell Advertisement [Twelve Feminist Lessons of War]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [Are These $2,000 Water Bills Racist?]( Decades of disinvestment and failing infrastructure shortchanges Black communities.
