The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     January 4, 2023 As of this writing, Kevin McCarthy is no closer to the speakership than he was yesterday, when the California Republican, a man who has pined for the job for god knows how long, [humiliated himself with a first-in-a-century failure](. But after losing five votes in a row, torturing your newsletter writer with enough C-SPAN to last the rest of the year, I declare enough! Even the [most anxious man]( on the House floor [seems to have checked out](. We'll be sure to update you once a speaker emerges from this mess. But let's momentarily shift our gears to what's giving us light today. For me, it's finally watching the [touching series finale]( of Derry Girls and jumping back into reading thanks to [Nell Zink's Avalon](. I'm also pleased to tell you that for the first time in two years, I successfully dragged my ever-depreciating body to the gym this morning. It turns out, endorphins are real! But they're not enough to get me through all this Republican infighting. So thank goodness for delightful writing on topics that have nothing to do with Washington. I highly recommend this [surprisingly poignant piece]( from my colleague Jacob Rosenberg on the scourge of cars parked in bike lanes, as well as Abigail Weinberg's latest on the [USPS going electric](. Her lede genuinely cracked me up—and I have a feeling many of you here will be tickled as well. —Inae Oh Advertisement [House Subscriptions Ad]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [The IRS Finally Got Some Funding.
